Two Under 2

crib or toddler bed

Just looking for some feed back. My oldest daughter will be around 18 months when my youngest daughter will be ready (or we will be ready) to move her into her room (crib). Thinking about my oldest daughter going into a toddler bed at that time.

When/will your LO go into a toddler bed? I know that it really does depend on each child but im just being curious.

Re: crib or toddler bed

  • My 22 month old is not yet ready for a toddler bed. I mean, I could try, but she doesn't climb out of her crib and she's sleeps so well, so why change it? I do plan on trying the transition around 2 years.

My DD was 14 months when DS was born and was 16 months when DS went into his crib. I am so glad I bought a second crib.

  • 17 months apart here and buying a cheap 2nd crib was some of the best cash we ever spent.

I was usually tied down tending to the baby in the mornings and knowing the toddler was safe and contained was priceless.

Plus I'm a big fan of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" club when it come to all things sleep related.

And... I didn't want to force any unnecessary change on my older one just because we decided to have another one, KWIM?  There was enough change coming with out forcing that particular issue as well.

We didn't move the oldest to a toddler bed until he tried climbing out at 28 months and didn't move the younger one until  32 months.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • We moved DD to a toddler bed at 15 months and she did great. This time around, I don't feel like DS will be ready to move to a toddler bed until he's closer to 2, maybe later. Plus, he'll be sharing a room with DS2 and I don't want DS1 to be able to get out and bother DS2 while he's sleeping.

  • Mine were so close together that I had to buy a new crib for the second period.  But with both kids I bought nice furniture that will last a long time.  So both cribs convert to toddler beds then full beds.  I spent a lot on each set but it is nice knowing that all I have to do in the future when they are ready is convert.

  • Drew turns two this month and he's still in his crib.  He sleeps great, loves his crib, and doesn't try to climb out, so we're not going to change anything yet.  I'm thankful that I have some place safe for him to be if I can't get to him right away when he wakes up.  He enjoys sitting in his crib and jabbering and I enjoy an extra five minutes to finish up whatever I'm doing.

  • DD1 is 22.5 months and still in her crib.  DD2 is 10 months and in her crib.  When the next one is born, DD1 will be 2.5 and DD2 will be 1.5.  We plan to move DD1 to twin with a bed rail or a twin mattress on the floor, shortly before #3 is born.

  • We moved Cole to his big boy bed last week.  He could have stayed in his crib longer, but his room is completely childproofed, so he didn't need to stay in it.  He still goes to bed on his own, doesn't get out of his bed until he wakes up in the morning, and then will play for a little until he calls for us.

Owen still isn't in his crib yet, but I bought them both convertibles that will become full size beds, so I absolutely don't regret it.  It was very nice to not change anything in Cole's routine until both he and I were ready to do it.  It was also very nice to have a place to confine him when i needed it!

  • We moved DS1 to a twin bed at 13.5 months. DS1 is a big boy for his age and the crib wasn't working anymore.  He's done amazing in his bed and has since the 1st night we've put him in it. He knows how to get in/out of his bed but he still sits nad waits on us to come get him in the mornings and after naps. It really depends on your child. For DS2, we don't think that he'll be ready quite as soon as DS1. We'll probably wait until closer to 2
