Babies: 9 - 12 Months

how much does your 9-10 month old talk

so my LO just turned 10 months old, and really doesnt talk all that much. i am not really sure how much they are even supposed to be saying at this point tho. she says dada, baba, & nana. and occasionally mama... but i really dont even think she says those things in any correlation witH the actual perso or thing. SHe doesnt look at her dad and say dada really. she does a lot of yelling and  just noises i guess. should i be concerned. I talk to her ALL day long about everything we are doing, i started sign language about a month ago ( milk, eat, more and diaper change) in an attempt to help ease some of her frustration and help us communicate. Its more like she is still just babbling? is this normal? do your LO's tlak a lot, or say alot, or at least look at you and say mama?

Thanks so much

  • Yes, at 10 months babbling is by far the norm. If your child was 28 months and only had 3 words it might be something to look into, but 10 month olds dont often have any words at all :)

  • thanks so much! i guess i am a worry wart, lol. i try very hard not to compare babies ,but when i saw my friends LO looking at her, reaching for her saying mama i got nervous bc that baby is a month younger than Emmalin is. but i will quit comparing and worrying.  THANKS!!!

  • between 9 months and 1 year they will start to put mom to mama and dad to dada and the bottle to baba...my lo is 9.5 months and has already started this.
  • He doesn't say any real words yet which is totally normal for 9 months.  It'll come to her, don't worry!
  • Every child is so different.

I just looked at our blog to see where DD was at developmentally at 12 months, and she was WAY ahead of my DS. She had about 10-12 words, and he says mom, dad and ball.

I guess I should say that DS does the physical things earlier than DD (crawling, throwing things, etc). He will definitely walk earlier than her as well. However, DD was way more verbal, but did those things much later than DS is.

  • The only word she knows is "mama".  She will babble other "words" like "baba" but they don't have any meaning.

She does understand who "da da" is but won't say it yet.

Most kids don't start saying real words until closer to a year or beyond.  You have nothing to worry about.

  • LO says "dada", "mama", "baba" and "nana" but hardly ever appropriately so I always assume that it's accidental.  He does often mimic what we say like saying "Uh" when we say "uh-oh" or "Ba" when we say "bottle" but he won't ask for it outright.  It never fails though when I say "Momma" he says "Dada" :)

  • DD has always been a "talker"  She babbles a lot.  She is now saying Jackson (our dog)  mama and and abba (hebrew for daddy)

  • Your LO says 4 more "words" than mine does at the moment.
    "To me, you are perfect."

  • mine only says "good girl" and that's only because she's heard her dad say that since birth. other than "num num" (food) and "dada", she's wordless. but she knows how to make her desires known.
