Do you have a huskey? Cuz I need help!

We have had our huskey for about a year now but I don't ever remember her shedding being this bad. How do you keep your house clean? We have all hard wood floors so we sweep about 3x a day. Her undercoat is about 95% gone so I can't figure out where all the hair is coming from! Should I just buck up and pay to have someone comb her or is there something else we should be doing with her? Help I need a cleaner house!

When we had our boys, I vacummed twice a week and swept every day. That's really all you can do. If you've only had your husky a year then you probably haven't seen her blow her coat. They blow their coats twice a year and it is an INSANE amount of fur. If you have the funds, take her to a groomer and have them give her a bath and brush her out, if not, do it yourself but you're looking at  a 3 hour job. It's just part of having a husky.

  • Oh we love her I'm not complaining about her I just want to know how to make it all better for everyone involved.

So...when she "blows her coat" which may have been what just happened this past week...and we give her a bath do we comb her out wet or dry? And will it all come out at once or should we repeat this again? Right now we have to do it ourselves but next time we will have it done for us!

  • I used to have an Elkhound that had the same type of coat. What type of food are you feeding her? We found that switching to a better food really helped with the shedding. He still shed like a crazy man though!! He's been gone for almost a year  :(   and I still find his hair around the house!
  • My husky has been gone almost 2 years, never been in out new house and I STILL find white hairs.  Sorry, it is what it is.  I will never own a husky again.  It was horrible.

You can wait till he's dry, the bath just loosens the undercoat. If you do a REALLY good job brushing, you won't have to do it again.

  • I have German Shepherds and we have the same problem and feel your pain.  They do blow their coats twice a year, where the shedding is even worse, but normally that is in the spring & fall so it doesn't seem like that is your problem.  Have there been any changes in her diet?  That is usually the #1 culprit.  I would make sure she is on a high quality grain-free food, plus supplement with fish oil capsules every day.  We also furminate several times a week.

We did finally break down and get a Roomba (one of those robot vacuums that goes on its own) and it has made a HUGE difference!  I still bust out the Dyson once a week, but the Roomba has really cut down on the tumbleweeds of hair that used to roll past constantly.  It works great on hardwoods, not great on carpet/rugs.

    Good luck!

My huskies would blow around Febuary and then around August/September.

  • my pooch has the same coat.  there is no solution.  i brush and furmintae often.  bathing doesn't seem tohelp, and will clog your drains.
  • Thanks everyone! She had to have blown her coat because she's like 5 inches skinnier! And I think I remember it happening in the fall it just wasn't such a big deal because I didn't have an infant crawling around trying to eat the fur balls! We will try the diet things you have offered! And we will comb comb and comb some more!
  • We had a huskey as our family pet growing up. The Furminator is awesome! I have one now for my small dog and it works so well on her under coat. I highly recommend it! And they have fish oil (cod liver oil) tabs for animals. Apparently it makes their coats shinier, smoother and easier to comb out and more tame while in the process of shedding. (Not entirely sure on that, but that is what our vet said.)

  • The furminator is great. brush them daily to try and get the loose hair out before it goes all over the house.
