High-Risk Pregnancy

Cerclage

I am 20 weeks as of this past thursday and am due to have a cerclage on Monday due to a shorten cervix. Has anyone ever had a cerclage or can you tell me anything about it? I have been doing research since Im stuck in the hospital but would like some stories if you all have any. This is my 4th pregnancy but I dont have any living children so this could be a welcomed solution to my loses. Thank you ladies...

Re: Cerclage

  • I've had 2 with this pregnancy (my first) so ask me whatever questions you'd like to!  As much as I learned about conceiving and pregnancy I hadn't really heard of a cerclage til it happened to me.  Both experiences were different so just ask away.

This is an incompetent cervix forum that has a lot of helpful information.  I joined after I had my cerclage at 16 weeks (I made it to 35 weeks with bedrest from 16w to 35w).  Many of the women on the forum have had multiple losses due to IC and will be able to answer your questions. I am sorry for your losses!

  • Hi there I have had two cerclages my first was a preventive cerclage at 14 wks, I dont want to scare you but it did fail my water broke two weeks later they think they punctured a whole in my water bag. I do have IC so when I got preg after this I told my mfm I did not want surgery unless I had to and wanted to try bed rest she agreed but at 19 wks my cl droped to a 1.7 so off I went to have the cerclage. It really isnt that bad they take you to the or first thing they do is put in a epidural. They hook you up to machine to watch your Bld pres. They lower half of your body goes numb they put your feet in the air in straps and go in and put the stitch. They whole process takes like 15 mins. Really quick, then they put you in recovery make sure you dont have contractions you can walk go to the bathroom. There are many success stories with IC and cerlages. It has been 6 wks since my surgery so far the stitch is the only thing holding lo Im on sbr but its working. Hang in there it seems scary but it is worth it. I had them do a us before and after so they could see where my bag was so they could avoid rupturing it again. Your in good hands and they do tons of surgery all the time. GL T&P it helped me to hear success stories I think youll do just fine.
  • Hello, I lost our baby girl at 20 wks 4 days when we realized i have an incompetent cervix.  Pre-pregnancy (after our loss) we spoke with the MFM Doc. She had suggested the Vag cerclage at 16 wks with BR. I did some more research on them.  Not that will help you now. But there is another kind of cerclage.  It's called a TAC  Trans abdominal cerclage.  This can be performed pre-pregnancy or at 11 wks of pregnancy.  I had mine set up to be a pre-pregnancy surgery but we had a little surprise before hand.  So at 11 wks I flew to Chicago  The wonderful Dr. A Haney did is magic, and now we have a 2 yr old Delilah.  I carried her to 36 wks.  I did spend the last month on BR but only because of my bp not my cervix.  I will not have to repeat the procedure.  The purse like stitch will only be taken our when I want it taken out or it can go to the grave with me.  I do have to have a C-Section with any births I have.  But that was ok with me.  I now am 16 wks preg. and so far so go.  There is a group called Abbyloopers these women all have had losses from IC.  It's an awesome group of ladies.    I hope this helps and not confuses you more.  Sorry for your losses The best of luck to you.  Louann

  • I have a cerclage, but mine was placed at 13 weeks and would be different from what you'll experience.  I'm surprised and saddened that your doctors didn't place a preventative cerclage for you.  I hope your surgery goes well and your baby stays put.  Good luck.
