VBAC

Question about VBAC

Hello ladies,

I know it's mighty early in this pregnancy but I have my doctor's appointment Monday and I was going to ask if it is possible to have a VBAC or just have another c/s.

Background:  DS was born at 39 weeks via c/s because he was huge (10 lbs 22").  I had GD (sugars were well controlled but he was still huge) and it was either induction or c/s.  I was monitored weekly with growth scans and the day of the midwive said to me "Honey, I would do the section because you aren't dilated and you aren't thinning out. If we induce you, you may be here in labor for 3 days and still end with a section."  We opted for the c-section just because I was concerned about shoulder dystocia.  I have no regrets from my decision as there was another woman that was induced the same day (a Monday) and she ended up having the baby on Thursday via c/s.  My recovery was fairly quick as I walked a lot and I was able to do the stairs at my house when we got home on  Friday without a problem.  I would say that I felt really good by the time he was 3 weeks old.

Should I ask about a VBAC because I know second children can be bigger and I more than likely may have GD again given that I do have PCOS.  If they would schedule a c/s how soon?  Is it possible to have a VBAC with a larger baby?

Thanks for all of your help!

Re: Question about VBAC

  • There is no reason to rule out a VBAC if you wish to have one.  FWIW, my DS was 10 lbs, 2 oz and my DD was 8 lbs, 5 oz.  So, not all second babies are bigger.  And my friend delivered her 10 lbs 12 oz baby vaginally with no issue (ok, she did tear a bit;-)  But baby was fine.  So, it is good to look into those things.

I didn't have GD with either pregnancy.  My family just grows big babies.  They saw no reason that I couldn't deliver DS vaginally except that he went into distress- thus the c/s.

Good luck with your conversation with your doctor!

  • My baby wasn't as big, but I successfully VBAC'd him at 9lbs 5oz with only a small 1 degree tear. I have no doubt I could have delivered a 10 pounder with how smoothly my labor and pushing we t
  • Thanks ladies!  I will ask tomorrow at my appointment.
