Decided not to breast feed

After a smooth as butter pregnancy, I ended up with a very difficult delivery and recovery. I've decided I won't be breast feeding. Looking for others in same situation with recommendations to formulas.

Re: Decided not to breast feed

  • I decided also not to breastfeed, which is probably best right now since my milk still hasn't come in.  I'm using enfamil newborn which has been good for my daughter so far.  I mean I only have 3 days experience with it but for what its worth thats what I'm using.

  • Did either of you ladies even give your babies colostrum? I am not judging just wondering.  I too am on the fence about breastfeeding but I figured I would at least give her a few hours/days worth of the stuff that first comes out since they say there is a benefit to it.

  • Gasp!  Just kidding.

Sorry that you had a hard labor and delivery.  I hope that your recovery is smooth from here on out.

  • I did not BF my DS and won't be BF my DD.  We used Similac Advance for a year, no issues and they send out checks often and I traded with friends.  I used the liquid (RTF) the entire year.   It is more expensive but was a life saver for us since we are always on the go and they have premade 2oz and 8oz bottles I would get.  I bought the 32oz jugs for home and used regular bottles.  My son was not picky, I could use Avent, Gerber, Nuby bottles as long as he was fed he could careless.

I PLAN on using Similac Advance with DD, I have 5 cases of 48-2oz bottles ready for her that I bought on sale through Abbott.

SIGN up for Gerber, Enfamil and Similac coupons/checks through their websites.

Also at EVERY doctor appointment ask the nurse/doctor for coupons, they would give me 30-50$ worth a visit which was awesome.

Look for sales (I was able to get 6-32oz jugs for 4CENTS at Walmart during a sale with coupons and checks combined.  I NEVER paid full price for formula.

  • my plan is to use Similac Advance as well (was going to do enfamil but Similac sends wayyy more samples & checks in the mail & my mom said she used similac with us, so I thought i'd try). I agree with PP, definitely sign up on their websites to get coupons & things like that. Also if cost is an issue (which it is for me) Target, Walmart & even K-mart all offer a store brand version which I've compared the labels myself they all have the same ingredients in them. So my plan is to use all of the similac that I have & slowly try to transition to the Walmart version of Similac Advantage. Hope that helps :)

  • I only BF DS for the first 6 wks, after that we used Walmart's brand (Parent's Choice) of formula--we started out on the "Gassiness" kind, but it made him spit up a lot--so we switched to the "Sensitive" formula they make, and it worked like a charm--he immediately quit spitting up. We kept him on that line of formula until we weaned him to cow's milk at 11 months. I highly recommend it--it's exactly the same as name brand formula, for a LOT less.

  • i breastfeed for the 1st few days and didnt enjoy it at all. At the ped office on Wed I almost burst into tears telling him about it. He told me to formula feed b/c I was so frustrated and not enjoying my little girl. I almost cried when he told me that! We are using the sample similac I got. Before we start buying a lot we want to see how she does on it
  • Since we are low income right now, I'm on WIC and they will help out with the baby's formula. WIC recommends Similac Advance, so I'll probably be giving that a try.

  • I'm in the process of drying up my supply we pump and fed during the day and use similac at night. Once the freezer stash I have built up runs out Olive will be on similac full time.
  • I just thought I'd throw this out there....I'm going to be using Gerber Good Starts with my LO (as backup during BF'ing), but I have Similac Coupons and am looking to swap those for Gerber Good Start coupons if anyone has any.  They expire 1/18/12.

I have:  (4)  $5.00 coupons for SImilac,  a Lg. 1.45 Lb. container of Similac Advanced Powder formula, and a smaller 12.6 oz Similac Sensitive Powder formula.  I'd like to swap the formula as well if you have any.

PM me if your interested, Thanks!  Big Smile

(I already posted this on the Swap Boards but have'nt heard anything.)

  • We switched over to Costco brand after a few months of Similac... no issues at all.

We also had a bunch of the Born Free formula dispensers, so you could always whip some up while out and about. Also kept one by the bed so we could make formula at night without having to get out of bed.  At home we mixed up bigger batches in the Dr Brown formula pitcher or a Rubbermaid shaker bottle.

  • I recommend the Target brand Up & Up formula. About half the cost of Similac and basically the same ingredients. They have sensitive, soy, etc. also.

  • We are supplementing DD with Similac Advance, we are using this because DH works for Abbott so we get a good discount on their products. I gave up on BF as of yesterday. DD took 36 minutes to get a good latch on my right side, nursed for 6 minutes and was done, still acting hungry so we fed her formula and she was satisfied, slept for 3 hours straight. I still had to pump after this session because I was so uncomfortable. So, 1.5 hours later we had a satisfied baby. I have a 21 month old daughter and I was feeling as though I wasn't giving her the attention she needed from me, so I made the decision to pump and feed BM during the day, still pump at night but feed formula. She was on the small side 5lb15oz so my #1 goal is for her to gain weight and be as healthy as possible, as well as being happy myself, and having a happy family. Since then, DH has seemed more interested in DD#2 because he can have a more active role in her care and DD#1 has not been acting out as much because I now have the time to devote attention to her as opposed to devoting approx 1 full hour every 2-3 hours just to feed DD. The best advice you can ever give to a new mommy is you do what works for you and your situation because although breast milk/ breast feeding may be best, a happy mommy and family are also important!

  • I started out breastfeeding but had a very difficult time of it. LO would fuss and fight me for up to half an hour before finally starting to eat. I was happy when my milk came in because I thought it might make things a bit easier. No such luck. There were a few times we had to supplement with formula to make sure he was getting some nutrition. Then, even though I was still trying to breastfeed him regularly and pumping, my milk production drastically (within 12 hours) declined and he couldn't get enough. It's been less than two weeks since he was born and my milk is almost dried up and we have abandoned breastfeeding for formula. I had hoped to breastfeed, but I'm partially relieved as well, since getting him to breastfeed was such a fight every single time.
