Kiddos with ear tubes.....

My son got his "new ears" about 2 months ago. As you know, he needs to wear his ear plugs whenever he is near anything that has to do with water. I purchased the ear band-it swimming headband to keep them in place and it's been an epic fail. I purchased it due to great reviews, but the band slides off my kids head every time I put it on. It either slides backwards or forwards and never stays in place. Any other recommendations??

  • Did your doctor say this was needed? My DD has had tubes for about 10 months now. We never wear plugs... Tubes still intact and draining and open..

This!  Our ENT said that the only water he would need this for would be Lake or pond water.  They did suggest washing his hair with fresh water, so I soap him up and rinse him off while the tub is filling and use the spicket (sp?) water to wash him.

I didnt think of that we dont swim in "dirty" water as they call it. Ocean and pool only. No plugs needed

  • Yup....our ENT said absolutely no water whatsoever. Trust me, I wish he would have said otherwise. It's a pain in the rear.

  • My DS got his tubes in January.  Our doctor only suggests using ear plugs if we go swimming in an ocean or lake and DS will be submerged.  The dr gave us the kind of ear plugs that is just a moldable silicon that you put into the ear, nothing that needs to held in with any kind of strap.  You can get them at any pharmacy, etc.  Have you tried that?
  • All 3 of my boys have had tubes.  We only use plugs when they go swimming and are submerging their heads under water continuously.  Water from the tub or a splash pool won't cause any harm.  I know about the ear bandit, I was conned into buying it too.  It's not really needed to keep ear plugs in place.

These plugs worked best for them

  • Both of my girls have tubes and I was told that weren't needed when they were around clean water.  Plugs only when being submerged like in a pool, lake or ocean.

With my oldest, they even said not to worry about it when she was at swimming lessons.

  • DD has tubes and we were told ear plugs were totally unnecessary, in any kind of water, totally submerged, you name it.  We have never used them, plugs are still intact and she is doing great-- she has had them for 5 months now!

  • Meh.  Unless he's putting his head underwater in a lake, I wouldn't do it.  Neither of our ENTs (the one who did DS's tubes and the one we saw for a check-up after we moved) said earplugs were necessary.

  • Our doctor said unless you are submerged in 3 feet of water, there isn't enough pressure to push the water into your ears far enough to reach your ear drum.  At this age I don't intend for him to be submerged at all, so we don't use them.

Same here, Emma has had tubes for about 2 months now.  ENT said there's no supporting evidence that ear plugs are necessary for water.  He said to be sure, it'd be best to avoid lake water (as it's rather stagnant and has more bacteria) or use ear plugs for that, but not to worry about baths, swimming in pools or at the beach.  So far, clear and beautifully draining ears.

Same here. Our ENT said there are two separate thoughts on this situation. Many older ENTs say that ear plugs are needed, but most newer ENTs say that ear plugs are not needed. My ENT has a daughter who had tubes and he never put ear plugs in her ears.

  • Allie has had tubes since she was 6 months old.  We don't have to be careful about water at all.  The doctor said that if she shouldn't go more than 3 feet under water, but there's no reason she should be doing that anyway.
