Edamame - High Protein Snack

I am looking for a high protein snack / low calorie snack to eat immediately when I wake up before my mid morning breakfast.  Is edamame safe to eat?  I heard someone say that soy protein is not good during pregnancy.  The kind I plan to eat are dry roasted.  They are low in fat (4 grams) and high in protein (14 grams) and convenient to eat on the go.  By the way, I am pretty consistent with my meal plan so if it is safe I will probably eat 1 serving every day.  Anyone know if edamame is safe?

Re: Edamame - High Protein Snack

  • No one can really tell you if soy is safe or not, as this is an ongoing debate in the world of nutrition with no hard evidence or conclusions that have been reported.

My book "100 Healthiest Foods to Eat During Pregnancy" raves about tofu. You may find websites that say soy should be avoided during pregnancy. I think you need to do your own research, listen to what your body tells you and talk to your doctor. Personally, as a strict vegetarian I avoid processed soy but allow myself tofu about once a week. Because soy contains phytoestrogens, I personally feel it's best not to eat daily. But that is what my body is telling me.
