Sleep vent

Please tell me I am not the only one with a LO that still wakes every 2-3 hours to eat.  I'm so jealous of everyone who posts about LOs sleeping for 6+ hours.

I was really hopeful yesterday, since DS was awake most of the day and really only took one long nap (1 1/2 hours) and one short nap (1/2 hour) during the day.  I thought for sure he'd sleep longer last night...but I ended up feeding him at 2am, 3am (I didn't sleep in between those two feedings), and again at 4:15am.  I'm hoping he'll get over this growth spurt and miraculously start sleeping longer.

If your LO is sleeping through the night, what time do you put him/her to bed?  Do you try to keep him/her awake during the day?  Do you have any other tips to share?  Thanks!

Re: Sleep vent

  • Hudson doesn't STTN yet however he usually is good for a 4-5 hr stretch and then a 3-4 hr stretch. I don't try to keep him up during the day because all that gets us is an over tired baby that still won't STTN. We let him nap when he wants to and as long as he wants to (as long as it's not insanely long). He usually "goes to bed" around 8-9:00. We put him in his pajamas, swaddle him and either put him in his room or if DH is going to be up for awhile put him in the swing and let him sleep there until DH goes to bed.

  • Until around 6 weeks, DD was waking up to eat every 2-3 hours during the night. A couple of days before she hit 6 weeks, she woke me up every 2 hours during the night like clock work. After 2 days of that, she started going 3-4 hours occasionally during the night.

We moved her into her crib last night because I've been having a hard time sleeping through all of the grunting and moving around she did in her bassinet that is in our room. She slept from 10 pm until I woke her at 4:30 am to eat (I was freaked out when I woke up and realized how long she slept without waking up to eat b/c that's NEVER happened before!). I don't know if it was the crib mattress that was more comfortable for her than the bassinet or what but I had more sleep last night than I've had since DD was born! I hope last night wasn't a fluke!

  • We are lucky to have about 8 days of 4-5hr stretches of sleep. It is soooo nice from the every 2-3 hr eating was doing last week.

I give him a bath every night (user aveeno soothing body wash). Dry him with a warmed towel out of the dryer.(yes, he is a prince!)

Then swaddle him. We had stopped swaddling, but then restarted it about 10 days ago.

Feed him before or after the bath (he determines this). Bath time depends on me, usually he gets a bath between 10pm and 10:30pm.

Naps during the day. Hit or miss. He sleeps when and where he wants to.

I have to believe it was the bath each night, since after I started that, he has slept 4+ hrs each night. I will not miss a bath. Ha ha.

    Good luck!

  • You are not alone. My LO is 8 weeks, and I've seen only a handful of 4-hr stretches. Most of the time, she goes 2 hrs, 3 if I'm lucky. I actually have to avoid posts about successful nights bc they make me insanely jealous and make me feel like I'm doing something wrong. Truth is, I just have a bad sleeper.

  • I think it just depends on the baby, unfortunately. My DS will sleep anywhere from 4 hours to 6.5 hours at night. He is a catnapper through the day but I just let him do what he wants sleep-wise (he does usually take at least one hour-long nap at some point but there isn't any rhyme or reason to the time). We usually put him down around 9 or so, post-feeding, clean diaper, wearing a gown and his sleep sack (he wasn't a fan of swaddling from the very beginning - he self-soothes w/his hands a lot). Sometimes he's down for several hours from this point, sometimes he wakes and wants to eat again at 10:30/11. But he'll usually sleep a good stretch for the first part of the might. He also sleeps in his crib. I found that he's done much better there rather than in our room. I think we were all waking each other up w/him in our room. Also, my DS has always wanted to cluster-feed in the evenings, which I think helps him sleep longer overnight; i dont think a mom can do much to change this, though. Good luck, I hope your DS starts sleeping longer soon!

  • I'm sorry! I think a lot of it is just luck. We have a good sleeper but she's always been good at nighttime sleep. We put her to bed between 10 and 11:30pm. I've tried earlier with no success. She now sleeps until 5-6am consistently. Things that might help. Swaddle for us is key. We use the escape proof swaddle on YouTube and you might try that. We don't do baths at night because they tend to rile her up. After I feed her, I just lay her in her RnP (another thing that I think greatly helps) in her own room, turn the lights out and put white noise on, and quickly leave the room. It will then take her about 10 min of wiggling around before she falls asleep. Also, I would encourage daytime sleep, but limit naps to no more than 3 hours, and encourage eating during the day at least every 3 hours, with cluster feeding at night so they can stock up (i breastfeed). Good luck, hang in there!

  • We get a 4-5 hour stretch followed by a 2-3 hour stretch at night-- during the day she's all over the place.

  • i've never gotten longer than a 4-hour stretch, but usually it's 2-3 hours at night.  dd1 was like this too, and woke every two hours all night long until i stopped night nursing at 22 months.

  • My LO is still up every 2-3 hours. He sleeps 3 to 3.5 hours his first 2 stretches, then 2 hours his last stretch. Once in a glorious while, he'll go 4 hours, but rarely. I do find that the better he sleeps during the day, the better he sleeps at night.

ETA: At 6 weeks, though, and again at 8 weeks, he was up every 1.5 hours. I assume those were both growth spurts for him (the 8 week one, I wasn't expecting!)

  • You're not alone. We're still on a 2-3 hour schedule, and even better, she won't sleep unless I'm in close proximity. I have to get her in her crib before I go back to work in a couple of weeks. Somehow.
Generally speaking, getting a baby awake during in the day means worse sleep at night, because they're overtired. To give yourself the best chance of a good night, make sure your LO naps well during the day.
