Working out...

Need advice,

Ok, I just made 6wks this wk, and I feel like I need to really get moving/exercising.  I used to spin, but want to do something not as intense.

I live in Chicago & we belong to LA Fitness, and I am thinking about taking the aquafit, matpilates, or bodyworks aerobics classes.  Has anyone ever taken any of these & do you think they will be ok?

Just asking, Thanks in Advance for advise :-)

Re: Working out...

  • Hi Bigv44,

I too am a little over 6 weeks and am quite active in the workout department.  I asked my doctor and he suggested to take it easy for a while, at least until the 2nd trimester, just to be safe. He mentioned to avoid forced lower body movement and stick to speed walking and swimming. Raising your heart rate is essentially good for both you and the baby.

It's hard, especially if you are used to being active at least 3 times a week, but not to worry, I found this website called **nice try spammer!**. Check it out! Truly admirable women who aren't afraid of a little workout even at full term!

    Hope this helps =)

  • I have worked out my entire pregnancy so far, but have eased up (weeks 9-12ish were hard!). I ran a 25k at 9 weeks and that was perfectly fine with my doctor. Now I was slower than I wanted to be, which was the hardest thing for me, but it can be done. My doctors words of advice are just listen to your body. Spin class is still okay with me. Wear a HRM if you have one, I now wear mine for all workouts. I take a ballerobica class once/week, aquaerobics once/week, and then I strength train and do yoga a few times/week. The doctor has yet to limit me from working out (besides squats with really heavy weights and outdoor bicycle riding/rollerblading for falling reasons). As soon as the weather cools down I will start running outdoors again most days.

  • Well I tried to do aerobics and aquafit, but I was unable to find faster result. I tried zumba and since then there is never looking back. I love dancing and it?s amazing. You can either join the local zumba classes or get a zumba kit and do it at home. I prefer going for the classes.
  • I just had my baby a week and a half ago and I worked out up until the day before he was born.  I am a runner and kept up my running routine into the second trimester before I switched to walking.  I also kept up my weight lifting routine but did reduce the poundage to minimize the stress on my back as my pregnancy progressed.  One thing you might want to keep an eye one as you get into the second and third trimester is your heart rate.  My doc advised me to keep mine at 140 because I found myself getting light headed.  This was great advice.  I have to say I'm totally convinced that staying active helped with delivery too.  My labor and delivery lasted a total of six hours!  Best of luck.

  • THANK YOU ALL!

I can do the aquafit class 2x wk, so I will definitely do that, and continue my yoga!!

    :-)

  • I also belong to a LA Fitness.  The one thing I don't like about their classes is the lack of attention you receive in their yoga and pilates class if you need modifcations.  I would suggest taking those type of classes in a yoga studio where you can get specialized attention.  For the zumba class, I just go at my own pace.  I know how to add modifcations myself for that class.
