Parenting after 35

Parenting Books...anyone have any suggestions on good ones?

I am pregnant with my first and was wondering if anyone could make any recommendations on good books related to infant care, parenting etc.  I was actually thinking of something with pictures that I could use as a reference guide.  Does anything like this exist?

  • I really enjoy "Parenting with Love and Logic" by Foster Cline and "Your Baby and Child" by Penelope Leach.  The second one has more in the way of care, feeding and maintenance.  I look forward to seeing other recommendations, we don't really have a good, basic reference-type book!

  • We really like Dr. Sears "the Baby Book" but I'm not sure that's a parenting book, more of a survival guide for the first two years book :)

  • I will admit to hating what to expect the first year - very judgemental in my opinion.  I like the Mayo book as a general guide.  We found Happiest Baby on the Block to be great - and you can probably get it used.
  • Baby 411 is a MUST in my opinion. Several friends recommended it to me, and it really is my go-to book for just about everything.   I also read Taking Home Your Newborn or something like that...it's ok.  The Nursing Mother's Companion (or something along those lines) was good too if you are planning on nursing.

  • I have to second the suggestion for Happiest Baby on the Block by Harvey Karp.  It gave me a lot of comfort and confidence to read that book.  I do also want to get Baby 411, but I haven't done so yet.
  • Thanks for the recommendations.  I have a few of the books mentioned.  I also purchased a book by Good Housekeeping on babies...I know that sounds odd but I have a friend that swears that book was helpful because it has pictures so you can compare what you are doing/ looking at.
