Did your babies have hair?

My singleton born at 40w 4d had a lot of dark hair, which later fell out and grew in blonde. The twins, born at 37w, had none at all, not even eyelashes, and theirs is slowly growing in blonde. Is this typical for babies born earlier then 40 weeks, or just an individual trait? Did your babies have hair when they were born?

Re: Did your babies have hair?

  • My girls were born 38w 2d, they had a full head of dark hair (like me!) it has fallen out quite a bit since then, they still have about as much now as they did when they were first born :)

  • My kiddos were born at 37w3d, and both had lots of hair. DS's all fell out till he was bald, then all grew back in, and DD's didn't appear to fall out, but it could have just been that the new growth kept up with the old falling out. Their hair has always been brown.

  • Yup, ours were born with a full head of hair. They never really lost their hair except when DS' cradle cap got bad, and it started to fall out.

  • All of our babies were pretty bald (very short hair) until their 1st birthdays!  I was the same as a baby ; )

  • Ours were born at 36w0d with lots of super dark hair for both, darker even than my dark brown. DS's hair all fell out twice -- once at 3 weeks old and again with bad cradle cap at like 3 months. After the second time, it started fillng in lighter, more of a dirty blonde. DD's hair didn't ever fall out dramatically, but was slowly replaced with lighter hair the color DS's was coming in. Now at 2 years 3 months old, both still have dirty blonde hair, like my DH did as a child (darkened to medium brown as he got older). Guess time will tell what color it will wind up!

  • Both of mine had brown hair when born at 36w2d.  It never fell out but the new stuff that is growing in is lighter and curly!

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • I don't think a few weeks matter I think it depends on the color, typically blondes are bald at birth....

  • DS had blonde hair and DD had brown hair at birth.  They didn't have much in the way of eyelashes, etc., at first.  The newborn hair fell out and DS' came in a darker blonde and DD's came in the same color brown as before.  Poor girl was bald for a long time though; she looked like George Costanza at Christmas.  They were born at 37w 1d.

DS has more hair than DD which makes sense as, based on baby pictures, DH had more hair than I did as a baby.

Interesting! I kept thinking the baldness was especially weird when my peri had me on so much folic acid. I guess it doesn't exactly grow hair on a fetus!

  • They both have fuzzy little heads of blond hair and blond eyebrows.  The nurse commented about how long their eyelashes are too.  They were way earlier than 40 weeks!
  • My babies were born at 36 weeks.  One had a full head of dark hair which later fell out and grew in blond.  The other was bald and now he has a full head of blond hair.

  • My boys were born at 34 weeks and they had full heads of hair. You could even see it on u/s at 31 weeks. I guess it just varies from baby to baby.

  • My boys were born at 34 weeks exactly, and both had lots of hair on their head, but no eye lashes or eye brows.

  • My guys were born at 37w3d and both had hair. Neither of them had any fall out but their hair keeps changing colors. Light to dark to light...

  • My 29 weekers have quite a bit of hair.  I was shocked.  I was completely bald when I was born and my DH had super blond hair.  I wasn't expecting anything.

  • My babies were born at 37w3d and had tons of hair!

  • M had some hair, but it wasn't thick or a full head by any means.  Probably an inch+ long, though.  Grant was SHINY bald.  They were born at 37w3d. O had a tiny bit less hair than M and was born at 38w5d.

So based on my 3, I'd say it doesn't matter.

G is getting fuzz.  M and O lost everything on top and had a chrome dome and then it grew in fast and thick and blond, but only on top.  The newborn stuff never really fell out around the sides and back. Just grew out.

  • DS1 was born at 37w5d, twins were born at 38w and all of my babies had hair.  I think it's different for every baby.
  • Mine were born at 34.5w with barely any fuzz.

DS2 has hair now, but at almost 13 months, DS1 is still pretty bald.  Hopefully he gets hair some day!

  • My guys were born a day shy of 38 weeks with light brown peach fuzz, no eyelashes and no eyebrows. They'll be 10 months tomorrow and their hair is just starting to come in. They have lots of hair but it's very fine and very blonde. They still appear bald in pictures and you can still see the veins in their scalps.

Not true for me!  I was born with a full head of black hair, which all fell out, grew in platinum blond and I'm still blond to this day...never higlighted a hair on this head!

Our munchkins were born with lots of hair as well...its mostly falling out now, except DD has a nice toupee :o)  we'll see what color it grows in as!

  • All of my babies were born with a head of hair which could clearly be seen on u/s. My oldest son's hair thinned quite a bit and started filling back in around 4-5 months. He had a ton of hair by the time he was a year old. My youngest son seems to be following in his footsteps. My daughter's hair thinned a tiny bit but nowhere near like the boys have and her hair has filled in quite a bit more. Now I'm just waiting for it to grow longer.

  • Both of our little ones had full heads of blonde hair.  Neither one of them lost any except for around the back from friction.  We actually had several nurses pop into our room during our hospital stay because apparently it's fairly unusual to see blonde newborns with a significant amount of hair.  News to me!
