2nd Trimester

Belly Button Rings?

Curious to see if those of you who have/had belly button rings have taken them out yet and if and when you plan to?

I have had mine for about 8 years and wanted to leave it in as long as possible in the hopes that I would be able to put it back in after LO arrives. (Not that I walk around showing my belly anyway, just it looks weird to me without it so if possible I would like it to not grow over) Only problem is that now that my tummy sticks out it is catching on EVERYTHING! The dog caught it when he was jumping on me the other day and put a tiny tear in, and now everything that catches/bumps hurts like he!!. Also I'm a little worried about it getting infected.

Anyway - anyone still rocking theirs? Or is it time to just give it up?

Re: Belly Button Rings?

  • I kept mine in until 32 weeks with my DD. After that about once a week I'd slide a ring through it to keep it open. This time, when I take it out, I'm going to go buy one of those "3rd trimester belly rings" for $10. They aren't stylish but they keep it open. One of my friends tied fishing line losely through hers a few times when she was pregnant and it kept it open and it was flexible. I've had mine for 7 years and didn't want to go through getting it repeirced so for me I made sure to keep it open. Good luck!

  • I still have mine in. I plan on keeping it in for as long as possible.

I did invest in a 2" belly button ring that can be resized if I don't get that big.

I was able to find belly button rings in different sizes at https://www.bellybuttonringsandthings.com/

  • I still have mine in..I was thinking about going ahead and taking it out, but I have had one in since I was 16. I would feel so weird without it, so, I think I will just wait a while longer :)

  • I have kept mine in and I bought a maternity belly ring. It is not the best looking ring, but it is flexible and is about 2 inches long.

  • I took mine out at 20 weeks just because it started to get snagged on things.  I have had it since I was 16 so Im just kind of over it and have no plans to put it back in.  They have rings that are meant for pregnant women like previous posters have mentioned but I have heard that they are uncomfortable.

  • i still have my in, and have no plans to take it out unless it becomes irritating or my belly button pops out and interfers. if that does happen, i'll get a maternity one. i agree with OP, i feel like my belly looks funny without one too since I've had it for 12 years!

  • I took mine out when I hit 2nd tri. I'd like to put it back in, but we'll see how my belly recovers . . .

  • I took mine out at about 11 weeks because it was poking through my clothes and I thought it looked funny. And like you said, it was getting caught on stuff. I know they have those long, flexible stems you can use when you're stretched out, but I personally think they look kind of trashy on a big belly. I'm not really worried about it closing up since it's been pierced for so long.

  • I took mine out a couple of weeks ago. Like you, it was catching on everything and hurting :( I've had it for 12 years so I am hoping that it will go back in after LO is born...if not then  I guess it's off the the piercing place lol

  • There's something you can get specifically for pregnancy. It's a flexible tube so it keeps the hole open but isn't uncomfortable. Can't remember the name but you can google it.
I used one last pregnancy and I just put it in this time. I've had my belly button pierced for 11 years and the hole closes up (or starts to anyway) pretty quickly.

  • I got one of the plastic pregnancy extenders from bodycandy.com  I wore it with my last pregnancy - the entire 9 months and plan to do the same with this one.

In general, I have to use the plastic navel rings, otherwise it ends up infected.  I thought I was going to have to take it out for good until I ran across the ones from this website.  I figured that since they were fairly cheap that it was worth a shot.  Best thing I could have done.  I don't foresee myself removing it for good though, it scarred from the infection that I'd had and isn't very pretty.  Since using the plastic ones, I haven't had an infection.

  • Just ordered a pregnancy bar - here's hoping I can deal with the ring that's in there now until it gets here! :S

Thanks for the great suggestions ladies!

  • just an fyi for those afraid of it closing: i had mine in for about 10 years. i took it out 3 years ago and the hole is still open. so if you've had it awhile and take it out during pregnancy it will prob still be open after. gl!

  • I still have mine ring in (19 weeks) and I am gonna try to leave it in as long as possible bc it closes so fast.
One of my friends found this "maternity leave-in belly ring". I guess its made out of some kind of material that is flexible enough to keep the ring in your whole pregnancy. I forget the name of it (I'll ask her and try to get back to you) but it looks kind of legite and I might try to do it.

  • I've had mine for 6 years total now. At one point, about 3 years after it was pierced, I took it out because I gained weight, but put it back in a year later when I lost it back, and it went back in (it was just a bit of a tight fit). So I took mine out at the same time as my nipple piercings a couple weeks ago (kind of a rip the band-aid off thing). However, I'm not concerned about whether or not it will go back in. I have found some really good flexible barbells that are dirt cheap and were wonderful for my nipple piercings (they can be cut down to any size necessary, and you can use prettier balls for the ends, as well):

  • I took mine out WAY before I got pregnant with #1 (I just got sick of it)

Fricker WILL NOT CLOSE. It disgusting, and it pisses me off. (I had it for like 6 years before I took it out)

  • I ordered the pregnancy rings yesterday and then caved and took it out anyway. It was all red and SOOOO sore. I thought it was from getting pulled at all the time because now that my belly sticks out it caught on everything, but when I really looked at it I realized that not only was it catching on things but my belly button was trying to pop out, and the bar is now to small to go from end to end. So relieved that I took it out, it was really hurting.

Hopefully when the bars get here I will be able to get them in! I don't like being able to see the piercing through my shirt so maybe I will just wear them at night to make sure it stays open of post pregnancy.

  • I got two of the flexi bars by 20 weeks. My barbel got really uncomfortable when my belly button popped. They do look funny under a shirt, but on the other hand so does a popped out belly button. They're perfectly comfortable even if you move them sideways (except for during u/s, take it out for those). They are kind of junky though, after all they are plastic, but I haven't had any problems with them.
