Follow up to my IUD trauma

Well I found out why MY insertion was so painful. My OB went and shoved my IUD up though my uterus and into my abdomen. They found it during my CT Scan today. Next tuesday I have to go have surgery to remove it. They will make an incesion in my belly button and fish it out. I'm livid, and terrified. This is my first invasive procedure ever. The only other "surgeries" I've had were tonsils and wisdom teeth removal. And again, I'm being forced to pump and dump my milk. T&Ps please.

  • Oh my gosh!  T&Ps!  Do they think there will be any long-term effects?

  • Seriously?!
I would be pretty upset myself. My doctor warned me that there was a chance (a very slim chance) that this could happen, but she said it usually only happens if they don't get a proper measurement of the depth of your uterus.
I'll definitely be praying that all goes well for you.

  • Kacelle: I asked her if I will still be able to have babies, and she said that I should be able to, and when they go in they will check and make sure I don't have tons of scar tissue on my uterus, and that it has healed. SCasey: I don't recall her ever measuring my uterus, she didn't do any type of U/S or xray or even stick a measuring stick up there before hand. She just put the speculum in then scissors things then cleaned with the brown liquid then the pokey thing with the IUD. And thank you both!

  • O M G!!!  I hope everything goes well!  I just can't imagine how your OB could go that far!  Indifferent

She's good at delivering babies, I mean she got M here safe and sound, and I love her for that...but after she takes this thing out, she won't be touching me again.

  • Omg T&Ps are with you. I had to have an u/s to see what was going on with mine because they had thought the same thing may have happened. I was fortunate in comparison to you but still upset. Mine was not where it should have been and I was at risk for rupturing the sides of my uterus and had to have immediately removed. Hoping all goes well for you.

Thank you. I'm just glad we found it as soon as we did. I wasn't scheduled for a string check until the end of the month, but I went in to see my regular doc for other vag issues and she didn't find the strings, so she sent me to get a U/S, they didn't see it and wanted to double check with a CT scan. If they hadn't been thorough I might never have known.

  • I've been thinking about you! And omg, I'm so sorry that this is the outcome! I'm sure the removal will be routine ans easy, but I'm so sorry you have to go through it. Glad to hear you will be better, in the short term and in the long, and would also be looking for a new OB.

When I had the Mirena inserted awhile back (before my first loss), my OB had a device that measured cervical depth to make sure this didn't happen. I'm so sorry yours didn't do that for you and best of luck getting it removed! T&Ps coming your way! And I totally support your decision not to let this OB near your lady bits again! I certainly wouldn't!

  • OMG! I would be so upset! I am glad they found it though. Good Luck. Surgery is not that bad, I promise, just sucks that you have to pump and dump.

  • Oh my goodness I am so sorry that this happened to you! How awful! I just got mine yesterday and my OB did let me know that he was measuring my uterus beforehand.  He also did an U/S immediately following the procedure to show my that it was in place. I also have to go back in 3 weeks to make sure it is still there.

I mean, sure there is always a risk associated with a medical procedure, but ya, I think I would be switching OB's too if I were in your shoes.  I really hope everything goes well with the procedure to remove it.

  • Oh and once again, I did my own research regarding the need to pump and dump. And again I have found there is no need for it! Surgery with anesthesia doesn't mean pump and dump. I mean we had anesthesia with our deliveries and were encouraged to BF as soon as possible! I know its dumb to get medical advice online, but I'm making educated decisions, and I refuse to waste my milk if i don't have to.

Thanks, I wanted to keep you updated so you wouldn't be scared anymore. It's not the procedure, it's the doctor. Sad

  • I'm sorry you're going through this!  What pisses me off is that it appears that your doctor just didn't take all of the precautions that she should have when inserting your IUD!  I don't have one so I don't know, but I've read up on them a LOT when I was trying to decide if I wanted one, I even watched an actual procedure to see how it was done, and most things I read mentioned a pelvic exam so they could get an idea of where the uterus is and the size of it.

Plus it seems like when they do go through the uterine wall it's not because the doctor STABBED IT THROUGH your uterine wall.  If I were in your shoes I'd be contacting a lawyer.

I really wish you GL and hope this entire ordeal is over soon!

  • Wow.  I am stunned.  I had no idea something like this coul d ever occur.  Good luck with the removal.  And good luck finding a new doctor!
  • Holy chiz! I would be livid if I were you. And that OB would definitely be getting an ear full from me. I wonder how many other women she's done that too!

  • Definitely get better advice on the pump and dump - you likely do not have to. Consult with an LC or ask a LLL leader or pharmacist to look up the drugs in "Medications and Mother's Milk" by Hale.

Then fire your doctor. And you can probably lodge a complaint with the state medical board/association for free.

Yes, I have decided not to pump and dump. I did a little Internet research and what I found made a a lot of sense. Every time I get prescribed something at this hospital they tell me to pump and dump, so I'm done listening to them.

Thanks, now I at least know to make sure they measure stuff first.  :(

I don't think you'd have much grounds for a lawsuit unless your fertility were impaired or you developed a serious infection/injury.  I'm not a lawyer so I may be wrong.  And you can certainly lodge a complaint with the practice and your state board.

Doctor's always recommend pumping and dumping! I think they do it just to protect themselves. I worked with a LC when I had surgery after DD was born. I asked my doctor wrote down exactly what they would give me during surgery and after for pain. Based on that information, my LC checked her book/sources and told me that it was perfectly safe to feed dd right after I had surgery. She said if I wanted to I could have done one pump and dump, but she didn't see a need for anything more than that. Also, if you want to check the medication they will be giving you and a LC is not available, talk to your baby's pediatrician. They would have the resources and should know what would be safest and be the least dangerous for baby.

I am so sorry you have to go through this! I am in shock, I can't believe this happened to you! Good luck, and I hope things get better for you soon!

Make sure your doc measures your cervix/uterus. Mine didn't she just went poking around blind! I'm sure you will do fine, my doc just sucks!

  • Awful.  I also wouldn't pump and dump, but it sounds like you have that straightened out already.

Good luck with your surgery. I'm sorry you have to deal with this :(
