Baby girl name Help!

I'm going in for my first ultrasound next tuesday and I'm soooo nervous. First and foremost, I want a healthy baby. But the BF & I are really hoping for a boy, we can't help it. There are just sooo many girls in our families (I get barfy when I'm around little girls and the excessive disney princess crap). And literally we had a boy's name picked out the day we found out about being pregnant. So, this has lead to a really difficult time picking out a girl's name. BF just doesn't know how/what to name a girl, so he pretty much left it up to me, all he knows is he doesn't want her to have a pornstar name. And most of the names I have come up with so far have been "porn star" names like Chloe, Phoebe, etc. But I can't stand the really popular names or the really traditional ones i.e. Isabella or Eleanor. Not that I think they are bad names, I just don't like them (sorry if this hurts anyone who has named their kid one of these).

So... I have made lists and lists and lists of girl names and now I'm drowning in it and am not any closer to picking out a name for good. And I know there's no "rush" cause I got 20 more weeks to go, but it's just something I feel I need to narrow down as much as possible - I guess just to feel better. Or maybe less guilty about wanting a boy so bad we had his name picked out from day 1. I don't ever ever ever want my daughter to feel less than completely wanted and loved. So yeah, she needs a name.

So I tentatively settled on a Korean name, because that's my heritage. Of course, nobody likes it (ppl on the Bump polls, etc) cause it isn't American but usually Korean people who live in the states have an American name that they use and I figure I could just morph her Korean name into an American one and use it. That being said, I am thinking I like the name Miyong and calling her Miya. The trouble is, I cannot come up with a middle name at all. Or maybe should I pick out one of my other favorite names and use Miyong as a middle name? Korean people don't have middle names so it's like I dunno what to do with it.

Some of the names I have always loved are:

Hannah, Jolisa, Fiona, Ember, Melody, Heidi, Pomona (I know this one is strange), Sabrina, Autumn...

I like nature based names. Names that are really ethnic like Irish or German are tough, because while they are beautiful it seems weird to name my girl something like Heidi when she's going to look more Asian than German. And would it be totally bonkers to have such a traditional Korean first name then a really traditional Irish or German middle name? Would people be like, wtf? Miyong Caoimhe Harmon...? (Harmon is the last name)

aaaggghhh... this is torture...

I guess I can't really say she will look really Asian because I'm also half Norwegian and and he's got German and I think Native American blood...?

Another twist to the naming thing is my family is from Hawaii and I love love Hawaiian names but they are like 20 letters long and kind of like a tongue twister, but they have beautiful meanings and I love that.

I'm turning this into a real mess. Help. Me.

  • All I can say is, wait until you know the gender before worrying about names. We didn't and still don't have a clue as to what our daughter's name will be. You have plenty of time to decide.

  • I love that you are sticking with your heritage, and I think Miyong is beautiful.  One of my best friends' grandmother immigrated from Korea, (Byan) but she gave her kids all very American names (Mike, LuAnn, and Jody).  I'm all about sticking with tradition!!  If it is tradition to not have a middle name, skip it!! You don't NEED one, but if you want, maybe a short asian-inspired mn or possibly (as many asians do) use the american name as the first name and the korean name as mn (Miya Miyong) A little rhymey but how often do you use your child's full name (when they aren't in trouble lol!)
  • I think if you LOVE a name, like Heidi, then go for it! Nobody is going to say "She doesn't look like a .... because she looks asian". We still haven't agreed on a name, and we are Team Green, we did decide we will go into the delivery room with 3 names and then choose the one that "fits" the baby. Here are some more ideas:

    • Kalia
    • Hollis
    • Leilana
    • Aurora
    • Viviana
    • Persephone
    • Flora

And I am sure there are many more...or these may be on your list! Good luck!

  • Our baby's name is Hannah! Although I do love the Korean name you've picked and the nickname. It's very pretty!

  • If you like Miyong, use it!  (Provided BF agrees, of course.)  If you're concerned about it "going" with his last name, you could use it as a middle name, or choose a middle name out of the list you liked  (ex: Miyong Sabrina... or Sabrina Miyong...).  That way when she's older she can choose for herself what she wants to go by.

I understand about wanting both names before going into the anatomy scan - that was important to me too! But if you really can't decide, don't stress yourself too much over it until you know if you're having a girl.
