Parenting after 35

Exercise advice...

Ok, I just made 6wks this wk, and I feel like I need to really get moving/exercising.  I used to spin, but want to do something not as intense.

I live in Chicago & we belong to LA Fitness, and I am thinking about taking the aquafit, matpilates, or bodyworks aerobics classes.  Has anyone ever taken any of these & do you think they will be ok?

Re: Exercise advice...

  • Check with your OB on what they recommend.  Also, check on Pregnant over 35.  The ladies over there might have some advice.  We get exercise over here chasing toddlers.

    What she said.

When I was pregnant, I was just too tired most days to continue with exercise/going to the gym. I'd come home from work and nap. For exercise, I'd take walks on my two 15-min work breaks and take the stairs instead of the elevator. Both of those stopped when I was put on bed rest due to GIH at my 32nd wk of pregnancy.

    Good luck!

    This and good luck!
  • As pp mentioned, checking with your OB would be a good plan, but what I have been told is not to start anything new or signficantly different than what you did before you were pregnant.
    DD1 is 3, DD2 is 1.
  • Along with whatever else, yoga is great stuff!  I've been doing prenatal yoga and lots of walking throughout, and I have zero pain and I don't even waddle at 41 weeks.

  • I have tried aquafit classes at my gym when I was recovering from back surgery.  It is a great reentry to exercise and would actually be a good work out if the class was active enough.  My class was full of old biddies (70 +) so we weren't really busting a move, but still it got me going when I needed it.  They way they do abs routines under water is pretty cool.
  • I was too tired/sick for gym classes when I was preg, so I tried to walk outside as much as possible.

  • I was a runner before getting pregnant this time. I to work out at LA Fitness in MI. My ob said to do spin, water aerobics and Body Works. Just watch your heart rate. My doctor said to keep it under 140. I wear a heart rate monitor. Just be carefull. If you worked out prior to pregnancy then you continue what you are doing within reason. I know that I can't run anymore as my HR gets too high.

  • I continued my running routine through both pregnancies. I still run about 8 miles every day now and also do weights and abs. If you were exercising before, you can usually continue doing what you did before, although you'd probably dial down the intensity as you get further along.
