Newborn birth certificate + social security card

Can anyone tell me if the Methodist Hospital in Med Center (where I plan to deliver) applies for both the birth certificate and social security cards on your behalf post labor? I was told that they handle everything. I know this is something I should ask on my hospital tour in a couple months, but just thought I'd get some feedback here. I'm trying to compile a hospital "don't forget" list and I know with everything going on I will most likely forget about applying for the birth certificate and social security card. I'm trying to avoid standing in long lines at social security offices and courthouses with a fussy newborn after the fact.

  • My memory is very fuzzy re: SS card, but for the birth certificate they send in the info, but you actually have to apply to get a copy of it. It does not just get automatically sent to you.

  • I delivered at St. Luke's in the med center last month and they submitted the SS card application for you. I received the card in the mail last week.

  • DD was born at Methodist in March. They handled the SS card info. We actually got the card in the mail just a few weeks after she was born. You will need to request a copy of the birth certificate from the city. The hospital will give you a copy of the request form. You can mail it in, or do it in person. I just mailed mine in last week. We'll see how long it takes! ;) HTH!

As an FYI - the form they give you at the hospital (that they collected the info for the birth certificate) can be used as documentation when you need to add your child to your health insurance.

  • You get a SS card.  You do not get a birth certificate copy; they just submit the info.

Ummmm one year later and we still haven't gotten copies.  Boooo bad mom & dad.

This depends on your company. My former employer would accept the Birth Facts document that you get at the hospital. My new employer requires an actual birth certificate.
