Babies: 3 - 6 Months

concerned about LO's weight

We go in for our 4 month appt. in a couple weeks, but I just weighed ds here at home and he is 18 lbs.  (15 weeks old.)  He was 7lbs3oz at birth.  I FF, and he eats 3-4 oz. every 2 hours during the day, and usually 4 oz sometime in the night.

How much did your LO's weigh at this age?

Would you be concerned/try to see the pedi sooner, or just wait for our appointment later this month?

Re: concerned about LO's weight

  • Nothing to worry about. 18 at 4 months is perfectly within the range of normal. My DS is 15 lbs and not even 2 weeks older than your LO, and I think he's just at the 50th percentile exactly.

  • I am pretty sure my little guy is only about 12lbs or less right now! he was 7lbs 5oz at birth and was 10lbs 9oz at 3 months. as long as your LO is eating and peeing/pooping/happy I wouldn't be concerned

  • I wouldn't be too concerned esp. if your LO is tall as well. At his 4 month appt. My DS was 17.14 (94%)  and 26.75 in. (95%) so he is very proportional. So babies are just bigger than others but still healthy!

  • How accurate is your bath scale?  I know mine is off.  I wouldn't be concerned until you have your baby weighed in the office and the Dr. is concerned.
  • My LOs 4 month appointment was on his 4 month birthday and he only weighed 14 pounds. My doctor wasn't concerned at all, so I wouldnt worry too much.

  • yeah, so. DS was 18lb at 4 months (95%).  You know what the doc said?  "he looks great"

You can't really have an overweight baby.  I wouldn't worry about it.

Baby Boy Born 3.15.11. 8lb 9oz, 21.75in. 6 month stats: 20lb 11oz (92%tile), 30.12in.(100%tile - who knew it went over 99th? Which means 100% of other 6 month olds are shorter than mine!)

This. DD was 19.1 lbs at her 4 month appt. That is 100%. She was 26.5 inches, which is also 100%. In other words, she's huge. She's EBF, and our doctor says she looks great. I asked if I should be feeding her less, and he said no way - keep doing what you're doing. :)   I don't think you need to worry about their weight until a year or so.

    DD born March 2011
    DS born Dec 10, 2013
  • Just saw the pedi today, DD is 17 lbs, 3 ounces and about the same age as your son. And the pedi was perfectly happy with that. Babies can be chunks, it's okay.

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you!  It's hard not to be worried sometimes! :)
