my boy has done this since he was born. he did it for this first time when we were in the hospial after he was born and i freaked out. i was told not to worry at all. just the way he is breathing when he sleeps and lots of babies do this. my LO usually does it when hes in deep sleep.
I'm not sure if this is what you experienced, but DS will occasionally gasp once or twice when in deep sleep. It doesn't wake him up and he doesn't sound like he's struggling or choking.
My DD did this a few times in the first few weeks. The pediatrician said it could be possible reflux, which it is not, since she only had the problem a few times. I contributed it to her still being congested from fluid from birth. I did use the nasal bulb to help de-congest her. The best thing I did was raise the head of her mattress. She sleeps in a bassinet in our room, so I just put a towel under the head of the mattress to elevate her a bit and it seems to have worked.

My little one would do this. He'd take a few breaths then not breathe and gasp to make up for the missed breath. My pedi basically said it's a form of sleep apnea. Baby is stilling learning all the body functions it needs to perform. The body just has to learn to breathe and sleep at the same time. Nothing you can honestly do but keep a watchful eye on her,but my DS has corrected the behavior thankfully.
I always lurk on these boards but never post, but I felt for this mom. My little guy did this as well and it scared the crap out of me. We took him to his ped and we had lots of tests done (had to go to an ENT doctor--ears, nose, and throat) and they came back with a dignosos of something called laryngomalacia. Here is a link that describes the laryngomalacia... good news is they usually outgrow this by the time they are 24 months and it is nothing serious...My ped had an sleep apnea monitor set up in our home for a month just to give my husband and I peace of mind. https://www.ivillage.com/tracheomalacialaryngomalacia-loud-breathing/6-n-136797
