Babies: 6 - 9 Months

I'm freakingout over C's weight

At 5 months, C weighed 13lbs 1oz. Today at 6 months, he only weighs 13lbs 7oz!! I cried. I feel like I'm doing something wrong. I am waiting for calls back from my lactation nurse and his pedi's office. I'm scared something is wrong with him or nursing isn't enough for him anymore. Waaaah.

  • Have you given him any solids yet?

  • Around 6 months is when I started supplementing with formula and then switched over to all formula within about a month.

It was horrible and I was really upset about the whole thing, but I just wasn't making enough for her and she wasn't getting enough calories.

Hopefully the LC can help you out, but giving up nursing isn't the end of the world. I was really sad at the time but seeing how much she's growing with the formula makes me realize I really did the right thing.

  • Ditto, Candr. Only I had to do it at 4 months. I still nurse mornings and evenings. I have to say, going out is much easier now that I can pop a bottle in her mouth rather than having to sit and nurse.

He gets cereal and fruit in the mornings, and a veggie in the evening. One thing I won't do is give up BFing completely. It means too much for me to BF him for a year. I have no problem with supplementing.

  • What did the ped say?  I understand why you want to keep BF and I hope that supplementing will help him chunk up enough.  I'm sure he is going to be just fine.

I understand, I want to BF for a year too. It's been a goal of mine before I ever even got pregnant. Try giving him some avocado (high in fat, the good kind) for lunch. Does he seem satisfied when he's done nursing?

Let us know what the pedi says. Like Rim said, I'm sure he's going to be just fine. He's always been a little skinny mini Big Smile

  • Hm. Wait and see what the Pedi says. He might be ready to go through his 6 month growth spurt and will put on more weight. DS only gained about 6 oz. from 6 mos to 7 mos and they didn't say anything.

  • My LO went from 16 lbs 8 oz at 5 months to 16 lbs 13.8 oz at 6 months. The pediatrician didn't seem concerned as he is way more active now. Is your LO long?? Kinda like a lean string bean? If he seems satisfied after nursing I wouldn't freak out. They all grow at such different rates.
  • Jay is in the 75% for weight. But when I wieghed him at five months he weighed less than his 4mont check up. By his 6month check up he gained 2 lbs.

SIL's DD will be 3 in october. She maybe weighs 24 lbs. Jay was over 20lbs and is 7months. She is heathly and has always been in the bottom %'s. Some LO's are just small. I wouldn't worry to much.

  • I wouldnt worry at all just yet.  How many inches did he grow?  Our pedi said that this is the time where they start growing then gaining, growing then gaining.  Chunky to slim, chunky to slim.  :)  I would try beefing up his solids.  We were told to bump LO up to 3x per day at his 6 mo appt to keep up with his growth pattern.  I also EBF and dont plan on supplementing or giving up anytime soon.  The gain between the 4 and 6 mo appts was definitely the smallest one yet so I think its pretty common.

  • This happened to my DS.  He gained exactly 1 pound between 4 and 6 months.  He dropped from the 25th percentile to the 5th.  The pedi wasn't concerned.  He said they just slow down in their growth temporarily and that it picks up.  Plus, DS was hitting his milestones on time, and I think that's supposed to be a better indication.  Even if you find out you need to supplement with formula, you made it 6 months of BFing and that's awesome!  But I understand being sad.  I know I would be.  I was hoping to make it to one year without buying formula.  If for no other reason, I was hoping to save the money.  We are extremely tight on money right now.  Keep us posted!  Good luck!

  • Please don't worry! As long as he is gaining weight, he's ok! He's just a peanut. R is the same. He put on half a pound in between his milk sensitivity appt at 5 mos and his 6 month check up. Of course I was terribly concerned but his pediatrician said that as long as he is gaining weight and showing growth at each appointment, she is not concerned. Keep doing what you're doing. As long as he seems satisfied with boob and the food you're giving him, hold off on the supplement.

  • Weight gain slows at about 4 months, and it is still going to happen in fits and starts. Most of the charts out there are for FF babies, who have a different growth pattern. I wouldn't be too worried.

  • E only weight in at 13.11.  I can't remember how much she had gained since her 4 month, but it wasn't very much at all.  I was the only one that was nervous about it though.

  • OP, from the looks of your profile picture, you and your H both look like you are relatively small-framed people. It might just be genes causing your LO's small stature.

  • This is just a thought but have you talked to your pedi about fortifying?  A lot of the moms on the preemie board do this and I have a few IRL friends that do it as well.  There are charts to tell you how much to mix to make 22, 24, 26, or even 28 calorie BM just by mixing in a little bit of Neosure or Enfacare formula into pumped BM.  Two bottles a day could make a big difference and since you would use pumped breastmilk you won't have to worry about your supply suffering because you are not replacing a feeding KWIM?  Good Luck!

my lo was the same weight as yours at his 6 month. at 5 months he had been 11.15. he has always been in the 3-5% so our pedi said he is not concerned. he says it is about staying on your lo's curve rather than number of pounds gained. it is disconcerting though.
