My 8 week DS has allergies - confirmed at 2 weeks with (microscopic) bloody diapers. I went off dairy/soy and he was having mixed diapers - some blood, some not. Went off the rest - egg and wheat (I already avoid nuts) and he was put on Zantac/diagnosed with reflux. I was pretty much at my max because he wasn't acting better so I tried one more batch of diapers and he was clear. Well, he wasn't acting better despite no blood, so they switched him to Pepcid. Still no better, and maybe worse. I called my gastro today to see if they can switch him to Prevacid. It was truly a miracle drug for my daughter with all the same issues (This is my second time doing the same diet). Only thing is that the gastro wants him on Elecare for 3 weeks before she is willing to try to him on Prevacid. I don't want to stop nursing if Prevacid is all he needed (it's all DD needed). Gastro claims that he is probably still allergic even though there is no blood. Anyone else experience this? My ped was willing to put DD on Prevacid at 6 months, but insisted a follow up with gastro last time around. We saw another gastro at the same practice that time, and he upped her dose. This time around, another ped at same practice is referring all to gastro, so I can't even get them to just give it to us. Apparently, Prevacid is not indicated for under one year old (yet), despite it seemingly being the drug of choice for reflux kids (and works the best). TIA!
Re: Allergic, but NO blood/mucous?! Need some advice from your experience with allergies and reflux
Have you done a total elimination diet? I know you said you're cutting out dairy, soy, eggs, wheat, and nuts, but if I were you I'd do a real elimination diet (like the one on the Dr. Sears site) and see if that helps. For my DD even some of the low allergen things bothered her (sunflower seeds, sweet potatoes, raw fruits and vegetables). She's finally starting to tolerate more foods.
I'd definitely try everything before I'd give up nursing. Good luck!
I would agree with trying the full elimination diet. My DShas never had blood in his stool and on/off mucus. We tried just cutting out dairy and soy with very little improvement. I have been doing the full elimination diet for over 2 months and have found very few foods, even the low allergen ones that we can add back in. it's an eye opening experience dealing with all of this.
As a side note, I hadn't heard that prevacid is contraindicated in babies under 1 year old. DS is on a compounded version and does amazingly well. Also thought I should mention and maybe you know this if your DD was on prevacid, but the solu-tabs have dairy in them and the pills they use to compound with do contain corn derivatives. Fortunately for us DS can tolerate derivatives but not actual corn.
Good luck!
DD is allergic to all of those and then some and has NEVER had a bloody/mucous diaper. I would try the total elimination diet for a bit before going on Elecare, which is what we eventually went on after the diet started taking it's toll on my body and sanity. The reason why I say try the elimination diet is because Elecare is not cheap and sometimes insurance can be a real biitch about covering it.
