When to lower mattress?

I know I have ages to go but when should the crib mattress be lowered? Ours has 4 heights and it seems like I'd really only need 2 - the highest and the lowest. I mean he's either pulling himself up or not. What are the middle heights for? When will you lower your LO's mattress?

You lower it for the first time when baby can sit up on its own. You lower it the 2nd time when baby can use the crib rail to pull up and stand.

PS some initially do not put it on the highest setting if you say have a small child or toddler in the home who can reach up and pull the baby out of the crib. So in your case they would start on the 2nd highest.

I assume you lower it the first time when baby can sit up on their own. I'm dreading that though because I already have to stand on my tip-toes to lay Emma down w/o dropping her!

The place we bought our set from said not the bother with the middle setting because its needed for such a short timeframe that we should just put it on the lowest setting when we need to lower it.

We went straight to the lowest when DS learned to pull up. I never saw a need to bother with the other heights. You could - it's marginally easier to put the kid in when they mattress is higher, I suppose.
