**LMJT** or other sewing godesses

I was inspired by all the sewing going on in craft check-ins and really wanted to make some valences and the changing pad cover LMJT posted. I've never sewn more than holes or buttons, but I recently bought a basic sewing machine to see how I like it.

I'm trying the changing pad cover this afternoon, but I realized I will have to cut the fabric I bought to do this. I'm going to the craft store this afternoon. What type of scissors should I buy and is there anything I should do that helps you cut straight lines. I'm really bad at that!

I'd appreciate any sage advice( fabric cutting or basic sewing) to help me get started.

  • Any fresh pair of scissors should be ok, label them so that you don't use them for something other than fabric, so that they stay sharp. Fiskars is a good scissor, just pick the one in the fabric aisle.

There's a tool called a rotary cutter, its basically a cutting wheel with a handle. You would need the cutter, a cutting mat and a ruler to cut straight with it. I use mine constantly. If you are going to sew more than a few things, its a great investment. I got one at Walmart for way cheaper than the craft stores.

I made 4 of those covers (2 for each kid's room) and they are pretty simple.

Let me know if you need help.

  • Thank you!  I feel like I'm getting nervous about this already. Completely silly, I know. Hopefully, I'll have something cute to post in Tuesday's check in. If not, I'll pm you, so you can get a laugh at how something simple can go horribly wrong. :)

  • I'm not a sewing godess (more like a wanna be) But I have two pairs of fiscar brand scissors and they are wonderful. To keep them sharp just don't cut anything but fabric with them and they shouldn't ever get too dull!
