We live in Seattle, WA and just found out DH will be working in Whiting, Indiana for the next 12+ months. We've never been there, have no clue where to start trying to look for a house to rent. I looked it up and see that it's close to Chicago too, so not sure if this is the right board to post this on.

We have a DD who is 18 months with another due in November and want a safe, family friendly neighborhood to live in. I'll also need OB/hospital recs. We just got the news today, so I'm trying to get some research started! Thanks for any help!

Re: Relocating from the West Coast... Help????
Ok, Welcome to Indiana! I do live in NWI (North West Indiana as we call it here, or "close to Chicago") and I can help with the question. Now, not to scare you, but Whiting is a very industrial area...steel mills, etc. As far as housing goes, if I was you I would look in the Dyer, Schererville, Crown Point, or even in Porter County for homes. Anywhere in NWI has access to the toll road and even I80/94 where your DH can hop right on and be in Whiting in no time. I personally would not look at housing in Whiting for the fact that it is a very old community and unfortunetly when the mass exodus of housing projects from Chicago started, most of those low income, no jobs, welfare, etc. people moved to NWI and being Whiting is right over the IL/IN boarder that's where most of them ended up. Anyways, seriously, I have lived in NWI my whole life and can really help if needed!!! GL and welcome to this board and the area!
OH, I almost forgot...as far as OB/GYNs and hospitals...I know quite a few good ones as I am a nurse, but we can talk location once you figure out where you are going to live. There are a ton of hospitals in NWI, so you are fortunate in that regards, but more importantly I know which ones have a NICU, so God forbid if you LO has issues they can stay in that hospital and not be transferred to another hospital with a NICU where you are not at...that was my worst fear...my friend had her baby at one hospital and they transferred him to another hospital because of problems at birth and she didn't get to see him for 4 days, NO WAY!!!
Thanks so much! You're making me feel a little better!
I had read online not to live in Whiting, but it's good to know why! Seems like Schererville and Crown Point are what most people are saying where we should look. Are there good and bad areas in both of these towns or are they generally all safe? I'm having a hard time finding stuff online... is it common to have a real estate agent help with rental properties around there? We won't make a final decision until we are there, but would like to limit our hotel stay if possible... I have no clue how our DD will sleep when we're all in the same room and when DH starts work I might lose my mind being in a hotel room with her all day!!!
I will definitely be asking you about OB/Hospitals when we know where we will be living. I think this is what is stressing me out the most right now! DD was in the NICU for 7 days and I definitely want to be at a hospital with a NICU!!!!
Thanks again, and once we're settled in I'll need to make some friends, maybe we could get our DD's together for a play date sometime!
Oh, I'm so excited you saw my post...I have a million things running through my head as to what to tell you!!! Ok, so I live in Crown Point so I would def. suggest here! CP is a very family friendly place, safe and the school system is ranked very high in the state (although you need not worry about that for a while). Schererville is also a good place, but a little more congested and the property taxes are higher. CP also has instant access to I65 which in turn goes straight to the Toll Road or I80/94 (both of which your DH can take to work and be in Whiting within 20-30 min.) As for hotels in the area, you're probably going to have to look in Merrillville (next town from CP), but please be careful which hotels you look at because there is a small section of hotels that are quite seedy (I am an ER nurse and we see a lot of drug overdoses and such from these hotels because they are right off the highway), so ask me what hotels you are looking at and I will tell you yes or no! I would probably suggest an agent to help you since you are so far away and I happen to have a few friends that work in the real estate field so if you need contacts I can give those to you as well.
Since our DD are so close in age I'm sure they would have a blast playing together...my DD is just now starting to interact with other kids her age and older and loving it! When is the big move planned? Where is your DH going to work (BP pops up in my head because they have a huge plant in Whiting??!!)
DH starts work there on 8/22, which does not leave us much time to get packed and drive over!!! He is a project manager for a construction company and will be on site at BP. You were right.
I haven't even looked at hotels yet, but once I do I will ask you about that. I think the scariest part is not knowing anything about the area and the fact that DD and I will be alone all day... I want to be somewhere we can go out for walks and feel safe! I also will take any real estate contacts! Are you on Facebook? I'm going to send you a PM with my name and maybe we can communicate on there a little easier! I'm horrible at checking PM's!!!
