My baby is six weeks and her belly button popped out a couple of weeks ago - the doctor said it was normal and it should go down by 1 year. Has anyone had this experience where it went down on its own or does it usually require surgery?
DS has one, he's 3 months now and already it had decreased dramatically since he first got it. Pedi told us that 99% of the time they go away by age one and that most insurance companies wouldnt even cover the surgery before a child is 2 or 3 because they often take care of themselves. He assured us that in his 30+ years of practice he has only seen 2 children that needed the surgery. So don't stress, it's no big deal.

DS has one and his pedi said the same thing.

DD1 had a huge umbilical hernia until she was almost 18 months old. We called it her belly toggle b/c it was too big to be a belly button! It was a great source of humor in our house as she liked to sit and play with it, push it in and pop it out. Sounds gross, but we figured we'd just laugh along with her
Anyway, it resolved itself. I believe it is much more common for it to heal on its own than to require surgery. Our pedi said they wouldn't operate until she was almost 5 anyway, because of the risks of general anesthesia on LOs.

DD #1 had a HUGE one -- seriously, the size of a Lindor truffle. It was squishy and gross yet endearing. It went away before she turned one. Ped said it looks like DD #2 may have one too but so far, she's still "in". We shall see.
I agree with the other ladies, common and no big deal.
