Is this child cruelty?

I'm pretty sure we're going to have to convert the crib soon. Crying C could climb out if he wanted to, but I know he doesn't realize he'll need to catch himself.  I'm ordering a rail tomorrow.

I kind of want to put a door knob cover on the inside to keep him in.  He can easily open the door...I know his room is safe and he would be ok in his room.  And we have the monitor, so I would likely hear him if he is up and moving around.

BUT twice in as many days I've read about kids getting into the cabinet under the sink - cleaning supplies.  C is very curious and if he yanks hard enough he can open cabinets that are locked.  He is also a climber.  I would worry about him getting out and getting into trouble while I'm sleeping.  Also, I'm a bad parent and I've walked outside (gasp!) while he's napping to take out the trash, etc.

DH worried that if we "lock him in" he won't be able to get out if something is wrong - like the house is on fire.  I'm about 110% sure that if that happens, I won't be relying on Cooper to save us or get himself out.  He'll likely be standing in his room screaming/crying.

Also a small part of me wants to keep him contained and not standing beside my bed at 4:30 in the morning.

  • I did it with Joshua until he was potty trained.  We took it off then so he could get out ans use the potty,

  • We keep a pressure gate in her doorway. We're on the second floor and have no gate on the stairs. Her door is very close to ours, so I can hear her even with our door shut. She is potty training so I just keep her little froggy potty in her room if she needs to use it.

  • When we moved DS from the crib to a bed we did this.  He is very good about staying in bed but it gives me peace of mind that he will not leave his room in the middle of the night.  I was afraid that he might fall down the stairs that are outside of his room.
  • Uh, I just took the door knob cover off the inside of DD's door yesterday. And it was for my own convenience, so she could get out on her own if I was nursing Julia or otherwise occupied.

  • We turned the door knobs backwards and lock them in the room.  Luca won't stay in bed...
  • We did this for awhile. After taking it off, we would do it on days when he kept getting up. Months later, we could just ask if he would like to stay in bed, or have the "gate" on his door.

It didn't take long for him to get the idea that staying in his bed was the best option. I cannot remember the last time we had to do this. He's 4 and he'll show up if he wets the bed. Otherwise, he stays put.

  • When Dylan moves to a toddler bed, we'll put a door knob cover on the inside of his door and also on the closet door.  I'd rather know where he is if there were an emergency than have him possibly roaming the house and us not be able to find him to get him out.  (In reference to your DH's worry).  I think it's much more likely for him to hurt himself roaming the house than being locked in his room.
