Two Under 2

Do I need a double stroller?

They are expensive! DD will be 19 months when number 2 is born. Just wondering how necessary it'll be. DD currently prefers riding in a wagon and won't stay in the stroller for more than 10 mins anyway. Hmm...

Re: Do I need a double stroller?

  • Get a used one on craigslist. You will find a double stroller comes in very useful.

  • DD#1 was 18.5 months old when DD#2 was born.  I have a double stroller and love it, I need it.  DD#1 was fighting us riding in her single stroller but she loves riding in her double.  Also my kid is a runner so a wagon wouldn't work for us, I need a five point harness for DD#1 while I am dealing with DD#2 in public places.

  • Interesting. Yeah, I was just planning on going without, but I am worried about dealing with two in public by myself, if DH isn't around to wrangle DD. I do have a stroller that converts to a double, but it is a UK brand (iCandy), and I am having trouble tracking down the parts for it in the US. I guess I will have to investigate further!
  • Craigslist.  We bought one used and I'm thinking I'll probably be able to sell for the same price we paid for it when we're finished.

To answer your question, we actually didn't use it that much for day-to-day errand running, etc.  But it was great for taking the kids for walks, the zoo, the farmer's market, etc.

  • I use mine everyday to take the boys for a walk/run, when we go to the zoo, museums etc.  My oldest gets tired and will hang in there for a while.

  • I'm really thankful for my double stroller.  I have a Beco Butterfly 2 for wearing DS, but I like having the option of the stroller, as well.

  • Absolutely a must for us. We use it every day.  DD1 will complain in it, too (she is currently 22.5 months and DD2 is 10 months), but it's too bad.  Sometimes there is no substitute for having them both strapped into something and being able to walk faster than I would, were DD1 walking too.

Also, if you scroll down halfway, you'll find another post asking the exact same question, with more answers.

  • I have two and use both of them every day.  Some days I am using them multiple times.  I have a BOB Duallie for walks and runs and a Baby Jogger City Select for shopping and other outings.

Like someone said, sometimes you just need them both strapped in.  And while I am all for baby-wearing, sometimes it is extremely hard to run after your toddler with your baby strapped to your body.  My son is over 25 pounds at 8 months.  Tryiing to carry him and chase DD, or having DS in the stroller and DD walking next to me isn't always ideal.

My DD has moments where she wants out of the stroller and sometimes she does walk next to the double.  But I have the peace of mind knowing that if she starts to have a toddler "moment", stops listening, etc that I can put her back in the stroller (even if she is kicking and screaming).  I feel more secure.

  • I sometimes wonder if I need one even though I already have the city select with the 2nd seat. It just seems like it will be a huge challenge to even get out of the door with 2 babies. DH will help me the first few times I want to get out with both babies, but then I will have to fend for myself after that. Hoping it all goes smoothly. Sometimes I think about wearing LO#2, but I like the option of having a second seat for her.

It is challenging, but it gets a lot easier with practice.  My husband has been deployed for almost 3 months now and we get out at least once per day.  Most days twice per day.  (if I don't get out I get stir crazy and the hours drag).

The BJCS is one of the reasons I can do that.  After you get the hang of it, it is a wonderful stroller and very easy to put together the way you want :).  Do you have the bassinet or carseat adapter?

  • For going to the park and such, I prefer to put DD#2 in a carrier, but if we're going to be out and about for a while, then I definitely turn to the double stroller.

  • My two are 19 months apart and so far I've gotten a lot of use out of my collection of doubles (I have three and pretty much use one of them daily). My favorite is the city select b/c it can go from a double to single in a snap. I also have a beco butterfly II which I tend to use while grocery shopping and while dd is playing on playground equipment.
