When to look to for a Daycare...

I am just starting my 2nd trimester and have already started to question daycares.  I am anticipating that the baby will be in daycare around 7-8 weeks.  If this is the case, when should I start the search for a daycare provider?  I am concerned about waitlists in the Philadelphia area.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

  • start now!  we got DDs spot when I was 5 months PG and we still had to wait a little longer than 12 weeks after she was born.  For DC #2, we had to get on the waiting list 4 months BEFORE I was PG in order to get this baby in the same daycare.   GL!

  • You should start visiting and get yourself on a wait list as soon as possible.  I started when I was 20 weeks pg and didn't get DD into the daycare I wanted until she was 4.5 months old (this was the first opening they had).  So the earlier, the better. Most places will make you put a deposit on your spot if you are on their list, so shop around and find a couple places you like.

  • ASAP! Its never too early!!

I got on waiting lists in the first trimester.  We only got a spot in 1 daycare and that was a fluke.  Our top choice literally just called me a week or so ago with an opening...I'd been on their list for almost a year.

  • In my area, it's never too soon.   We started looking around 19 weeks and there was only one center without a wait list.  Fortunately, it was one we really liked.  We booked in January for August placement.    Home based providers can usually be found with less lead time.
  • Start now!  The best daycares fill up first ...
  • now.  there's this daycare that i want dd in so badly, but their wait list is 2 years!  dd can't start until she's 3 when bigger classrooms open up.
  • Now!!  You are doing the right thing by looking now.  There are waitlists here too and DD was enrolled when I was 17wks pg.

  • Start now.  In center city and university city (Philly) the waits when we looked varied from 12-18 months for the infant rooms.  You probably won't have that long of a wait in surburbia but it won't hurt to get it out of the way.  Good Luck!
