1st Trimester

Exercise!

I just want to know if anyone out there is in my shoes, I am having another baby, my first born was premature born at 26w 4d, I want to know if I should exercise or just completely stop? I have been running and walking for the past month at least 2 miles every other day... I am scared if I continue something will happen, I want to continue exercising I want someone elses opinion! Please help if you have any advice!

Re: Exercise!

  • My doctor says exercise is fine as long as your heart rate doesn't exceed 140 bpm. I am a runner as well but running gets my bpm at 155 so I have stopped and now do a brisk walk. I suggest getting a heart monitor watch so you can monitor what you can and can't do. Most doctors and books say not to go above 140. I hope this helps.

  • Hello.

I had a pre-term labor with my son at 32 weeks, put on bed rest and delivered him at 38 weeks.  My doctor says I can swim (swimming is my thing) as always in my first trimester, but she will put some limit in the second trimester considering my history.  She is also recommending me to see the perinatologist to see if I need some help to prevent another pre-term labor.  She said I might not need it since I ended up having my son full-term, but just in case.

  • Given your history, I would definitely be very cautious.  I have history of fetal anomaly and some bleeding, was told to REALLY take it is easy with the exercise.  It's tough!

  • My OB encourages exercise. He insists it is important to a healthy pregnancy. Even if it is just walking.

I think all OB's would say this, IF the woman in question did not have a history of complications and problems.

  • to me it seems like light walks for a short amount of time just to keep your circulation and blood flow active would be fine. nothing straining, just enough to be moving around.

  • I just posted a similiar post. I am considered somewhat high risk due to a LEEP procedure I had yrs ago. I see one of the best HR drs in the SF Bay Area. She said keeping up my workout routine was fine-eliptical 45 min, abs (YES abs) and weights. She said I didnt need to reduce anything first tri as long as I wasnt overdueing it. I chose to knock my weights down a little bit, and do watch my heart rate. I know the 2nd tri Ill need to modify my abs routine and some of my weight routines.
