I was just diagonised with postpartum hypertension and was prescribed Labetalol. My doctor says I can still breastfeed, but I'm scared of the risks to the baby. Has anyone ever taken a blood pressure medicine while breastfeeding?
I was also diagnosed with postpartum hypertension and am presently on Labetalol.I am exclusively breastfeeding and baby is perfectly fine! We have not had any issues because of it, and I have been on it for about 2 months.
Good luck with the BP issues!

"Because of the low levels of labetalol in breastmilk, amounts ingested by the infant are small and would not be expected to cause any adverse effects in full-term breastfed infants. No special precautions are required in most infants.
One investigator reported that no adverse effects occurred in breastfed infants whose mothers were taking labetalol in doses of 330 to 800 mg/day."
I had hypertension pre-pregnancy and was prescribed labetalol and procardia during the pregnancy (I was prescribed a different medication pre-pregnancy). I'm currently still on labetalol and will continue to be until I stop breastfeeding. Then I can return to taking my regular medication. Labetalol is considered one of the safest hypertension meds to take during pregnancy and breastfeeding. I wouldn't worry too much. Hopefully you won't have to be on medication for too long. Good luck.

I was on labetalol and hydralazine. Didn't make a difference in supply and at least one of the main breastfeeding websites put both in the safe column.
