Babies: 3 - 6 Months

5 1/2 month old turning over in his sleep...good or bad

My baby learned to roll over a few months back and then he learned how to roll back and ever since he hasnt stopped even in his sleep.  He falls asleep on his back or side but then in the middle of the night i can hear him moving and i see that he has rolled on his tummy.  I've read countless articles that say that it is not good for a baby to sleep on their tummy b/c of SIDs and what not, but i mean i cant exactly stare at him sleep allnight and turn him back over when he rolls on his tummy.  What should i do??

  • Leave him be.  Put him down on his back, and if he rolls himself, let him.  This is my pediatrician's recommendation, for the reasons you stated- you can't watch him like a hawk all night long and flip him.

  • My LO has been a tummy sleeper since about 1 weeks old. DH and I tried EVERYTHING to get him to sleep on his back or even his side but he just will not have it. So to ease our minds we got him the Angelcare sensor monitor. Maybe that will help you to relax at night.
  • It's okay if they flip onto their tummies on their own. That indicates they have enough head control to move around if their oxygen is restricted - SIDS risk drops tremendously between 3 and 5 months because of this. And you can't stop a human from rolling around in their sleep forever. :D

This exactly. My DD started doing this about a week ago. The first night, I was kind of freaked out, but I got over it, and she is sleeping well.

Ditto the others - he's fine. If he can roll, he can move his head if he has to in order to breathe properly. DD has been rolling around in her crib for a couple weeks and I only considered it a problem when she would wake herself up rolling onto her belly. Then she learned to go back to sleep on her tummy and it has been wonderful since. I also have to disagree on the angelcare monitor rec...we loved ours up until recently, but now she rolls off the sensor pad all the time and sets off the alarm. Its very inconvenient for all of us!

  • Let him sleep.  My son started rolling on to his belly at 3months to sleep and has been sleeping on that way since.  IF they can roll and lift their head, they are fine.

  • DS has been doing this for a couple of weeks now. I wish he wouldn't because of the SIDS risk, but there is nothing I can do. He is determined to be on his belly when he sleeps, so that's how he sleeps now. Even if I get him into a deep, deep sleep before putting him down, he is always on his belly when I go get him for feedings. I understand how you feel - all you hear is back to sleep, back to sleep and then when they decide on their own that it is belly to sleep, it freaks you out!
