Yes, I have a stupid first time mom question.
I checked out the bedding sets at BRU today, because they have the one I fell in love with (if we have a boy). Anyways.... I couldnt find a salesperson for the life of me to help me out.
What do you use the quilt for? I mean it's huge for baby!! They are adorable don't get me wrong, but what function does it have?
Also, let's talk bedding sets. After seeing the sets today, I don't get the point. I'd like the quilt and sheets. I can make my own dust ruffle and curtains. But it seems like they only sell them as packages. Hence my quilt question? Thoughts?
Can I be like Steve Martin in Father of the Bride and start tearing out what I don't want to purchase???? Could I blame it on the pregnancy hormones? lol
Re: What is a quilt for?
Decoration.
Since you should not put anything in the crib with the baby, the only thing you can do with them is drape them on a chair or hang them on a wall.
This is the main reason why I just made everything myself. I'm not about to pay $200+ on a bedding set that has : sheets, dust ruffle, quilt & bumper when all I will use is the sheets & dust ruffle. I have already made my own curtains, dustruffle, boppy cover & changing pad cover and since I have fabric left over, I will be making some matching sheets.

For babies... they are all decoration. though, I also used ours for tummy and floor time before Anna got mobile.
But for toddlers, you can eventually use them as blankets. My friend's two year old sleeps with hers now.
Because we're fancy like that.
It does suck that the sets have so much stuff that seems unusable... But then sometimes to buy the things you want separately it comes out to be more money than buying the set!
For me, I plan to get a reasonably priced set and I am going to attempt deconstructing the bumpers and making valances.
Also as for the comforter I am not a fan of them on the wall, but I think it'd be cute to drape over the glider for snuggles during reading time when baby is a little older or just cold ( since I'd be right there watching her)
My Mom had also talked about putting pictures on the quilt and then framing the whole thing.
Crib bedding sets are completely pointless (and too matchy matchy for my taste). As PP have said, you shouldn't use the quilt in the crib (until they are older) or the bumper (IMO), so that leaves you with dropping hundreds for a fitted crib sheet and skirt that should cost you $50. I'm just buying cute organic sheets and making a custom skirt and curtains in fabrics that I like.
They sell them because they make a ton of $ off people who have not yet given up on the idea of having a "theme" that the kid will outgrow (and you'll get sick of) in a couple years, so then they can get you to buy something else.

More baby crap that you have to store when you realize you have no use for it!
Really all you need are some crib sheets. That's it!
Maybe the quilt will come in handy when LO is a toddler, but really, mine has just gotten in the way, hung on a chair, gotten stuffed in a box, etc. It is really cute, but what a waste of money!!!
