Pregnant after IF

Anyone Have Low PAPP-A?

If so, what did your Dr. say about it?

I've never asked on here even though this came up at my 1st tri screening b/c I figured it was uncommon, but I noticed it was mentioned below.

My came back in the 5th percentile which apparently borderline.  My Dr. said it can SOMETIMES mean that the placenta is less "hardy" (which can cause all kinds of scary problems) and that they're going to do growth scans (which so far have been monthly) to make sure the baby is getting big enough.

Re: Anyone Have Low PAPP-A?

  • Unfortunitely, I do as well. Mine came back in the 2.5%. I was told that they would need to do a growth scan in the 3rd Tri (mine is scheduled for next week). Based on how she looks, size-wise, they will make a determination as to how well the placenta is functioning. They said that they may say it looks ok, may need additional monitering or may schedule an induction/c-section date (worse case scenerio) based on her size. Honestly, it is scaring the crap out of me  (esp since I have barely gained any weight) but I know there is nothing I can do about it and nothing I did to cause it.

  • Mine is in the 20th percentile, which they said it's lowish, though I am basically very, very close to normal. So I might get dopplers every two weeks. I am honestly not very clear on it, I need to ask at our next appointment. My friend had this too, and she had a full-term, good-sized baby, so I am not overly concerned about it. Oh, and I just read that apparently Papp A tends to be lower for ART pregnancies.

  • Hi there. I usually lurk, but thought I would come out for a second. I received a very low PAPP-A and was given a 1 out of 54 chance of my baby having Trisomy 21. I was devastated and decided to have an amnio. It was the longest 14 days of my life! The results came back negative and found out we were going to have a baby boy.

I did develop GD and asked my MFM about low PAPP-A. She said (along with my original OB) that this test is fairly new and not very dependable. Due to the GD, I was monitored twice a week and never had any issues with my placenta. I did read that a low PAPP-A is usually seen with boys.

Just a side note: My little guy was born healthy with no issues. He is the light of my life!

     Good luck ladies!!

  • Patchen:

Me too (and I'm assuming your referncing my post below)

I feel better (sort of) after talking to the OB today. I do not know what level my results came back at. They kept saying the 5 tenths percentile, but that doesn't make a lot of sense to me... I'm thinking maybe the 5th percentile? Anywho!

He said I will have higher level scans that will take place at the perinatel specialists offices. The perinatologist will be the one to evaluate me each time.  He said I will have my a/s scan with them too between 18-20 weeks. He then said I would also have another screening done (quad screening maybe?) Which is a blood test. Honestly I can't remember when he said it would be. I would have another higher level growth scan around week 24, 28, 32, and then weekly after 32 weeks.

They will also be checking my vitals more often. I was told low Papp-A leads to uterine growth restriction, low birth weight, preclampsyia, pre term labor and worst case: still birth. (That's the part that has me super flipped out now).

But the kicker to all of this is: IVF patients tend to give false positive results due to the IVF procedure. So hopefully, in the end all of this monitoring turns out to be no big deal and I have a happy healthy baby!

I hope all is going well for you hun!!! ((Hugs))
