Stopping Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo - Side Effects?

Just wondering if anybody has any experiences with the side effects of stopping ortho tri cyclen lo.  As it turns out, I will likely be stopping the pill 10 days before a vacation to Italy and I don't want to be a total disaster.  I have been on the pill for several years and have never stopped taking it.  It is possible to stop sooner or later than the vacation if necessary.  What were your experiences?

Re: Stopping Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo - Side Effects?

  • I stopped it 2 years ago after taking it for about 7 years.  I took the entire last pack and just never started a new one.  Things I've noticed since stopping:

    1 - Acne

2 - Anxiety during the two weeks before AF.  This started well before we were TTC so I know it's not due to the stress of that.

3 - Periods actually got shorter by 1 day

If you're having concerns maybe talk to your doctor about it.  For me, I was fine emotionally after stopping it.

  • I stopped in October after taking it for 11 years.  I haven't noticed anything major to be worried about.  My cycles are long and unpredictable right now, my hair is not as thick as it was when I was on the pill and I think I notice a bit more acne as well.

Overall, nothing to be concerned about for a vacation.  I'm guessing the side effects for this pill would be the same as other hormonal BCPs if that helps. Enjoy your trip to Italy (so jealous!!!).

  • I have stopped and started ortho tri cyclen lo MANY times, my most recent one being this month (like a week ago). I never really have any side effects from stopping it.
  • I stopped in October 2009, after taking it for about 5 years.  I noticed a little bit of acne on my chin for a while, but it seems to have gone away again. I also have heavier periods now.  I never needed more than a regular tampon when I was on bc, and now I need to use supers on the first or second day of my flow.  Also my periods are longer by about 1 day.  But that's it.  Nothing major or earth shattering for me.  My periods have been fairly regular at 27-31 days since stopping the OTC-Lo.  Good Luck.

  • I Stopped Ortho after 4yrs of being on it. My side effects were:

BAD cramps during AF-one of the reason I went on it

irreg. periods-another reason I went on it, they've straightened out since but it took awhile

    Mood swings

Acne- but it cleared up during AF, just had it every other time... weird!

  • I had a few side effects, mostly acne (luckily primarily on my back and chest), worse cramps (one of the main reasons I started BC to begin with) and increased flow during AF.

  • I was on Othro tri cyclen Lo and then switched to the generic and I was on it for 10 years- Went off Aug 2010

    My side effects

    - serious bloating- like i thought i was gaining weight- but when i weighed myself i weighed the same....

    some acne

my period is shorter (on the pill 7 days) off the pill like 4-5 days

but my cycle is way out of wack now- last cycle was 45 days.

    Good Luck-

  • I went off the pill after 8 years in September 2010. I finished the pack I was on and never got my prescription refilled. I have noticed (through time, not right away) That i have been more moody/emotional. My flow has lightened and has shortened by about a day or 2. My cycles we're pretty regular right way. The last two have been about 3-5 days longer, I think because I was stressed out about ovulating on time and then ovulated late.
