Babies: 3 - 6 Months

C-sect mamas--- are you having another baby?

I know....I must be absolutely insane--but thinking about having one more baby.  BUT the doc said to wait at least a year before getting pregnant again.  Issue is that I'm already 35 (will be 36 in March) and I don't want to be 37 when I'm giving birth (via my 3rd c-section).  Body is getting older and of course the risks of having something wrong with the baby is higher as well.....

Curious what you guys were told and what your plans really are....

Re: C-sect mamas--- are you having another baby?

  • Yeah, you're insane. No, just kidding! :)

Is the *wait one year* a standard recommendation after a c/s?

I had a c/s and seriously, I thought for a long while (like when I first got pregnant) that I'd be a one-and-done girl, but now that baby is 3 months old, I'm (gently) tossing around the idea in my head of one more. I actually already discussed getting my tubes tied with my OB, but upon further reflection, I think I'm not going to make that decision right away.

H is fine with one, or one bio and one adopted, or two bio. It took us a long time though to get pregnant so who knows if another bio would even happen for us.

Anyway, to answer your question, my OB didn't tell me a specific time to wait, but perhaps that's because a) I told her I was one-and-done or b) I'm getting older (I'm already 37, and to wait a year would mean delivering when I'm 39). I guess I'd lean towards A as to why she didn't say anything.

If I do have a second child, I am concerned about the recovery of a c/s, because my recovery for my first was near unbearable. I'm still not 100% from it, and that's even after I'm back at the gym and eating right to get this alien-like weight that I gained off (the high weight gain I'm sure isn't helping the recovery process). But all of those concerns are not enough to make me decide definitively not to have one at this point.

Don't let age scare you off. Be mindful of the risks, but don't not have a 3rd if you really want to b/c of age, or c/s recovery times, or anything else.

  • I had 2 c-sections under 13 months apart. I got the OK from my doc to get pregnant whenever I felt comfortable at my 6 week PP checkup.

  • I was not told to wait at all...I will defiantly be asking my Dr. about that at my annual exam.

Wow!  That is close--but that's awesome too.  A couple questions:

    1.  How is having two LOs so close together in age?  Mine are 3 yrs apart and it's got pros and cons.

    2.  How was the pregnancy having two so close together and how was the recovery?

  • I had DS 14 months after having DD, both were c/s. I am currently pregnant with number 3, due 15 months after DS's bday.

I hope you don't mind me answering these too.

    1. I love having them so close. In fact, that's why we started trying for # 3 so soon (when #2 was 2 months old). Obviously it's harder than just one kid, but DD didn't experience any jealousy that I noticed.

    2.  My pregnancy was the same as the first, no worse no better. The recovery was fine too! It hurt less actually after the second one. DH was also home a week longer, so that helped when caring for DD, who I couldn't carry at the time.

  • My doc said to wait 6 months.  But then I had another surgery (to remove fibroids in my uterus), and she said to wait 3 months after that (which would be October).  We'll probably TTC at that time or at least by the end of the year.

I am in the same boat but I'm even older (40 years old!). My OB said to wait 8-12 months. I definately feel the clock ticking away...

  • We were wating for 5 more months to ttc, but I think we are moving it up.  Dh and I were talking today on the phone, we think we both want to try sooner, so we are discussing it tonight.

My ob told me at my 5 week pp I could ttc whenever I wanted, and he recommends a vbac, in my case.

I always thought two kids would be my limit. Now that I've had my first, I feel like I could have babies forever. I just love being a mom - it's so rewarding and I'm so in love.

But we can't afford more than two or three, tops. Plus, I hated, hated, hated being pregnant...I was miserable and sick for at least 25 weeks out of the 40.

Anyway, we plan to try again next summer when DD is just over a year old. I want to try for a VBAC and was told to shoot for 18 months between deliveries, which it will easily be. I was told one year if I am okay with scheduling another c/s.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE having LOs close in age. I much preferred to get the pregnancy/newborn/teething stuff out of the way, then to start all over again. It wasnt nearly as hard as I thought it was going to be. DS was too young to be jealous, and at an age where he would rather explore than sit with me. He seriously didnt even notice I brought home a baby. lol. Add that to the fact that DD is an easy baby, and it's been so manageable.

I liked the pregnancy the way it was. I honestly thought it would have been harder if DS was older. He was taking 3-4 naps a day throughout most of my pregnancy, so I got a ton of rest. The recovery after was tough, but for reasons unrelated to pregnancies spaced closely.

ETA: you should ask this question on the 2u2 board. You'll get a ton of feedback.

    GL with whatever you decide!

  • My DH and I wanted to have another baby right away and my Dr didnt say anything about waiting longer than the 6 weeks recovery period. She did say to keep taking my pretnatals but that was it.
