What do you do to prepare? I would loooooove to do a home birth (although I don't think I am a candidate right now, overweight and a slightly elevated bp) but DH put his foot down. I told him if he is making me go back a hospital, he must hire me a doula.
I don't think those 2 factors alone would prevent you having a homebirth.
It took a little while for my DH to come around to it. It helped that a friend had one (unassisted!) right around the time we were deciding. He met with the midwife with me & voiced his concerns. He talked to a few dads that had been through it already. We had watched Business of Being Born while I was pg with Charlie and other than seeing too much of Rikki Lake's body he learned a lot from that. I'm sure he'd be willing to talk to your DH if he was interested.
As far as preparing do you mean physical stuff or mental?
My MW had a list of essentials we had to have. Here is her list:
I borrowed a birth pool from a friend & bought a new liner for it. Lots of people use a kiddie pool. Of course that's only if you want a water birth! I bought a bunch of shower curtains from the $ store to cover my cream colored carpet, but honestly it wasn't really that messy at all.
I took Bradley classes during my first pregnancy and learned a lot about relaxation, etc. from them.
Let me know if you have any other questions
