I know the m/s is coming. I just know it. I want to ask my OB for Zofran this time because I won't have the luxury of sleeping it off this pregnancy.
Can you tell me your experiences? I don't go to my OB until 08/15 and I want to come to her loaded with info. She's very open to things like that. I her!
Re: Any 2+'ers have Zofran experience
I had hypermesis with my first, and was on Zofran for a limited amount of time. Like the pp, I was puking multiple times a day from week 6 through the end of my pregnancy (although the nausea actually got better for me from weeks 20 - 30-ish). The Zofran did help the puking a little, but it did very little for my nausea. I'm on a board dedicated to hyperemesis for this pregnancy, and most users agree that Zofran is good at controlling the puking, but the Unisom/B6 combo is what helps with the nausea. You may want to ask your doctor what she recommends, though, because if your m/s is not accompanied by a ton of puking, you may be able to get by on lesser medications.
Zofran can make you very constipated, so if you do go on it, it's important to try and keep things moving with lots of fiber, stool softeners, etc... Some people get really bad headaches on Zofran, but I never did, so I can't help out much there.
With DD, my morning sickness started at 6 weeks. I anticipate it being the same this time. So, I'm prepared for it to start Monday. My appt is a week after that.
Last pregnancy, I was able to sleep a lot because I didn't have another child. I also had a lot of time off because of the early 2010 blizzards. Not really a chance of blizzard in a heat wave. So, work will probably be open.
I'll look into that. Thanks! Is it something normally taken at night?
It depends on your severity. A lot of posters on my HG board take 25 - 50 mg of B6 with 1/3 - 1 whole Unisom three times a day. I haven't tried it, but they say that wehn your m/s is bad enough to warrant that kind of dosing, you don't get the sleepy side effect of the Unisom. I've noticed a lot of people on here, though, are being dosed at 25 mg B6 per day, and 1/2 - 1 whole Unisom at night, before bed. Your doctor would probably want to start you on a lower dosage and then gradually increase, if you're not seeing a reduction in your nausea.
Oh wow, yeah. That sounds like something I def need my doctor to regulate.
As a sidenote, I did use Unisom in my 3rd tri as a sleep aid. The desired outcome (sleeping) did wear off after a few weeks. But by that time, I was at the end when use of antihistamines is contraindicated anyway. And, I prob would have peed the bed with all the times you get up that late in pregnancy, as I'm sure you are aware!
I took zofran for the first half of all of my pregnancies. I was in in fellowship (subspecialty training) as a physician for my first two pregnancies and working 80-90 hr weeks, so being more tired than I already was was not an option. My last pregnancy I was an attending and although my hours are better, still needed to be able to function well at work and when I was called in at 3 am for emergencies. Zofran worked great for me and for many of the other physicians and nurses I work with. Good luck!
And then there was our daughter was a surprise adoption - the easiest pregnancy ever!
