When did you give LO nuts/peanuts?

I will ask the pedi about this, but l also want to use my own judgment. There is so much conflicting information out there and it seems even medical professionals disagree. My father has a mild allergy to tree nuts (no anaphylaxis, but he gets hives), so I'm probably extra cautious. What did you do? If you haven't given nuts yet, when do you plan to introduce them?

Re: When did you give LO nuts/peanuts?

  • There is bad peanut allergies on my side of the family so we were told to wait until 3 years (I think?). However, at a birthday party around 14 months- one of DD's friends decided to share a peanut butter cookies with her and she was fine Big Smile I think she has only had it one other time and she did not like it.

I know these things change all the time but I thought if there was a history of a food allergy, you were supposed to wait until 3. (So, DD has not had shellfish either).

  • Similar to above, at 15 months DS had some banana bread that turned out to be banana nut bread. Since there was no reaction and no family history of allergies, we gave him PB. No reaction and he liked it, so now it's part of our routine. I agree with you that the literature is really mixed on the best time for introduction.

  • We introduced it a little over a year.  There is no history of food allergies in either family, DD hadn't had any reactions to anything she ate, so we decided to offer it to her.  It was love at first bite and she's been eating it since then.
  • before one year, sprout had pine nuts.  i wasn't thinking & gave him some pesto we were having for dinner.

i've recently given him peanut butter.  he's had it 3x now & each time it was a very thin layer over a small piece of bread.  No issues other than crying when it's gone (this kid loves food).

I think in your case being cautious is a good idea.  I know that I gave Sprout peanut butter the first 2 times right before I had my allergy appt. which is at a hospital.  That way, if something happened, we'd be steps away from the emergency room.

  • With my first, we accidentally gave her nuts on her first birthday!  (They were in the cake---ooops.)  But she was fine.  After that, we have given her peanut butter and other baked goods with nuts in it and she has never had a reaction.

With my second, I have given him small amounts of peanut butter twice in the last month--he will be 1 next week. He was also fine.

FWIW, my first had a horrible rash when she was 3 weeks old and was tested for allergies and we were told she was allergic to all sorts of things--rice, milk, wheat, oats, soy, etc.  She seemed to grow out of all of those allergies well before she was 1.  But DH and I have no family history of allergies.

same here.  I actually think it was just before a year, some PB in a cracker of some sort.  But again, no allergies...if there had been, we would have waited longer.

  • At around 13 months b/c he needed a protein source and we had no history of allergies in the family.  Picky guy was refusing everything...

  • We were going to wait until 2 because I have a mild cashew allergy, but my mom shared her pad thai with him at around 16 mos. A month after that he had a bunch of allergy testing done with no sign of reaction to nuts and we've given it to to him every so often since then.
  • In one of my new mommy groups someone mentioned that the new allergy guidelines just came out recently.  If I'm remembering correctly, they are no longer advocating for universal delay of introduction of nuts and peanuts--more factors are taken into consideration.  I'll see if I can dig up the email with the info...

  • We haven't given DS nuts yet. His cousin has a peanut allergy, and I have some food allergies. It's not as much that I think waiting will change whether or not he has an allergy. It's more that I don't want to deal with the answer yet. Our pediatrician's written recommendation is to wait until three if there are food allergies in the family, but verbally, she said it was fine to try it now (or even before now).

  • we waited til age 2 with DD and at 14mo old, DS has not had any yet.

DD eats sunflower seed butter, her DC is a nut-free facility and this is a great substitute. (Wegman's carries it as does amazon).

  • DD had some PB for the 1st time around 14  months.  She ate it for 8 weeks off and on, then one day broke out in hives.  Turns out she's allergic to peanuts and chestnuts.  We tried sunflower seed butter, but she hated it.  She likes cream cheese on her crackers and sandwiches.

  • I have a very mild peanut allergy (occasional headaches from them).  We were going to wait to introduce them, but like PP's DS was given a PB cookie around Christmas and had no reaction.

We slowly introduced it to him since then.  Now the mini Ritz Bitz PB sandwhiches are one of his favorites!
