Parenting after a Loss

Not a PAL regular, but have a question

Hello, I am PGAL with an almost 3 year old boy and 1 on the way, due in September.  My little boy is not at all interested in toilet training, but we've been working on it.  Well, this week, we've hit a real snag in the road.  He has suddenly developed the most god-awful case of diarrhea I have seen in him in a LONG time.  He doesn't seem to be sick or have a stomach virus, his diet has not changed at all, so I am assuming he is cutting 2 year molars.  (He had some teething pain several months ago, but, to my knowledge, he still has not broken through with any of the 2 year molars - it's hard to really see in there without getting chomped on though!)

Obviously, if the diarrhea continues he's going to go to the doctor.  In the meantime, though, I have a problem.  He has developed a diaper rash that is really horrible.  He's old enough to understand, but his thinking is very flawed -- when he poops, he does NOT tell me - because he doesn't want me to wipe him because it hurts when I wipe him.  Unfortunately, sitting in a messy diaper that I have not been able to catch right away has left his bottom even more red and raw.  I can not get it through his head that he HAS to get out of the poopy diaper immediately!

Tonight, after his fifth nasty poop today, I cleaned him up (he howled and screamed as I did this) - I'm using just warm, wet washcloths because he can't stand wipes - and as I was drawing a bath for him, he was dancing in the hallway crying and saying "My butt is so red, it's so ouchy.  It burns!  Burns!"   I just want to cry, I feel so bad for him.  Does anyone have a non-traditional way of dealing with a VERY sore bottom on a toddler?  I have tried every "traditional" available diaper rash cream and lotion (and powder) on the market over the last couple of days - nothing is helping.  Anyone have any creative ideas??? Obviously, in order to heal it needs to STAY clean and the messy poop needs to stop -- I'm just thinking, what can I do to alleviate his discomfort in the meantime?

Thanks for reading my very LONG-winded question.  Much appreciated!

  • We put a little baking soda in warm water to soak in. Is there anywhere you can let him be nekkid that's easy to clean if there's an accident? His little tush needs to air out. Poor babe. I hope it gets better soon!

  • Try slathering him w/maximum strength Desitin.  It works as a barrier so there needs to be enough applied to thickly & completely cover the skin w/ the cream.  A few treatments took care of DS's tush when he had a 10 day episode of diarrhea. GL!
