When did your Dr. Say to call him?

Yesterday at my 36 week appointment My doctor gave me the 'when to come to the hospital run down'

I have always heard to wait until your contractions are at least 4-5 minutes apart, but my Dr. said to wait until they are 4-5 minutes apart and have been for at LEAST an hour / hour & half. I know he is trying to cut down on time wasted in hospital but I dont think I want to wait that long! (can you hear the FTM panic in my voice? lol)

What are somethings your Doctors have told you?

  • 5-1-1...5 minutes apart lasting 1 minute for 1 hour.

This is when I'm supposed to head to the hospital. I'll probably call a little before that, but won't leave until the 5-1-1.

  • 4-1-1--4 minutes apart, lasting a minute, and continuing for an hour or longer.  We're supposed to call when we go into labor, and the on-call midwife will check in with us periodically, but generally we're supposed to head to the birth center at 4-1-1.  I'd much rather labor at home for as long as possible than at the birth center, but we're going to have to weigh that with the time of day...it can take an hour or more for us to get there during rush hour, but only 30 minutes during non-rush hour times or on the weekends.

  • My doctor just gave me a list of things to call for:

     Bleeding

    Leaking fluid

More than 5 contractions an hour

If the baby doesn't move/kick for more than half a day

He didn't give me a time or length for the contractions just to call if I have 5 or more in an hour no matter how long they last.

  • My doctor said to call the clinic when contractions start, not the hospital triage.  THEY will call the triage for me.  She hasn't told me when she wants me to actually go.  Just to call when I start having regular contractions, and I'm sure from there, they'll tell me to come in.

  • For some reason I thought it was 3-1-1 or maybe that is just what I told myself since I don't want to go to the hospital until I absolutely have to!

I hadnt heard of it either actually.. I do know they will send you home if you arent in labor enough to their liking (my mom said she almost got sent home to labor with me) so thats probably why that 5-1-1 is there.. my goodness I REALLY hope my water breaks again..

ETA My OB hasnt given me the run down yet though either so Im not sure what hed say.
  • My doctor hasn't said anything about it yet, but the book they gave me when I switched to their practice said 5 mins apart, lasting a minute, for an hour.

As a funny side note, my parents told me the other night about when my mom was in labor with me and my dad was trying to time the contractions and he was so flustered he kept screwing it up and they were getting all kinds of crazy numbers.  Once they got to the hospital, her contractions were actually 2 minutes apart, not the 6 that he had calculated.  Silly dads.
