Re: If you breastfed twins past 12 months

  • I have. They'll be 18 months tomorrow and we're still nursing in the morning and at night. My supply has really dropped in the last 2 months, and I'm no longer pumping at work, but I'm willing to continue as long as they are.

Once we hit 1 year, we started introducing soy milk (milk allergy) in sippies gradually during the day while I was at work. In the last 6 months, they've gone from EBM bottles during the day to all sippies with soy milk and only nursing at night and some days in the morning.

There hasn't been a hard and fast date for any of these transitions for us, they've just kind of happened naturally. So as a result, I've weaned from the pump and nursing sessions very slowly and haven't suffered any engorgement or discomfort. The girls haven't resisted either, so it has worked well for us. My guess is sometime in the next few months they'll self wean given my very low supply at this point, and I'm perfectly ok with that.

  • I nursed in the morning and night until 17 months. Eli would still be nursing if I hadn't weaned but James was ready to stop a few months ago. He really only nursed for a minute or two at a time. I had a few days of mourning when I stopped, but overall it was an easy transition. I had planned on nursing until they were 2 or until they self weaned. But Eli started putting his hand down random women's shirts, making the milk sign and saying "more." That kind of prompted me to stop.

  • I nursed for 14 months. They dropped sessions by themselves...we were only nursing in the mornings for the last weeks and one day, they both started screaming at the sight of my breasts. They didnt walk to nurse, they wanted food.  And, like that, they were weaned.

It was hard on me emotionally...but very easy for them!

  • I never EBF'd (on the contrary, I had to fight really hard to get what milk I could), but I stopped the domperidone at 12 months and stopped pumping at work shortly thereafter. I thought my supply would be gone in a week or two, but with DS still nursing in the morning, at night, and on the weekends, it held on for another couple months. (DD has wanted basically nothing to do with nursing since just shy or a year.) I still nurse DS at night (usually right after we get home from daycare), but I suspect he's not getting much.

I really miss the days right after I stopped pumping at work when I would come home full and DS would get this big grin on his face and run to me and plop down in my lap to nurse. It was precious to see his excitement.

I'm basically planning to let things run their course. Every now and then DD will bust out saying "boobie" and making a sucking face in public (which I mostly just find funny, since she so rarely nurses!), or DS will tug at my shirt in music class, but it doesn't bother me enough to quit altogether.

  • i had thought i would wean at 12 months, but as the time came we were nowhere near ready.

we still nurse a few times a day. we were only doing it first thing in the morning, before nap and before bed, but now asher has decided he wants to nurse when he wants to nurse, so he will do something like nurse 3 times between 3 pm and 6 pm and that's it... and benjamin just keeps with our old schedule.

i have slowly cut down on pumping while i am at work and been fine with that.

i am glad we're still nursing, and my plan is to go until they're 2 or they wean themselves.

  • I'm still going.  One of mine self-weaned already, the other is still nursing 1-3 times a day.  I am still pumping twice a day, but I am very ready to stop.  I also have a huge freezer supply, so they are both still drinking all bm, with some cows milk at meals.  I'll nurse until M doesn't want to anymore.
