Clicky Poll: How much TV does LO watch daily?

Just curious. I am working on my education degree and we learned that the average American child watches 4-5 hours of television every day. I thought this was insane, but that is what we were told. I will be the first to admit that since becoming pregnant again, DS watches a lot more than he used to, *sigh*. No where near four hours though. TIA!

  • The tv is on for background noise, but LO never watches it.  He doesn't even notice it.

  • IF we turn on the TV, he watches less than 30 minutes but I don't ever turn on the TV during the day so he may end up watching something twice a week, if any.

  • Very sparingly.  Not "never", but not daily, either.

  • Does the study mention what ages encompass that average? I have a hard time imagining any very small child watching 4-5 hours of TV per day, but it's not that big of a stretch to imagine a middle age or high-school age kid getting in that much TV between after-school shows and nighttime/post-dinner TV. I probably watched close to this much TV in high school between MTV/VH-1/afterschool specials and 90210 & Melrose Place-type shows in the evening. (I'm a reformed TV junkie, we don't even have cable now!)

  • I have actually tried to get DD to watch TV, but she just isn't interested. I'm sometimes jealous of those kids who will watch for 15-30 minutes. Sometimes it would be nice to have a break:)

  • We do not tv, per the AAP guidelines.  Once we do introduce TV we'll do a very limited approach, I think it's a terrible habit and I know there is a correlation with obesity.
  • I voted less than 30 mins, but it's only maybe 2 days a week, not daily.

  • He watches PBS during breakfast so I would say about 20 minutes. That's the only time he watches TV.

  • I voted 30-60 min. but only because I used to let DD watch 20 min. of Blues Clues in the morning, occasionally 20 min. of Backyardigans in the afternoon (if I needed a breather), and 30 min. of Einstein before bath.  Nowadays she's more independent with her playtime so she only watches her Einstein at night and that's it.  On a bad day I'll let her watch something but that's so far and few in between now.

  • I need a SS. The TV is on often as background noise. Sometimes I'll watch a show while playing with DD2. DD1 watches maybe an hour or so a day. I've only put on a DVD directly for DD2 twice. (Baby Signing Time) She didn't even watch it. She might glance up here and there when the TV is on, but she won't watch for more than a minute.

This exactly. I chose "never" because I might put something on for him once a week or so, sometimes twice, sometimes not at all in a week. Apart from intentionally putting something on for him to watch the TV is never on while he is awake.

If I want background noise I put on music as I think it's as "damaging" for me to be watching TV as it is him. The whole reason it's recommended kids not watch TV is that it detracts from the one on one time they get from their caregivers. So if I'm stuck into a show, even though he's not watching it, he's getting no positive interaction from me.

  • I voted 30-60min, but it's more like 0-60min, give or take on the day.  I have a 4yo also, and he is the reason DS2 watches as much as he does.  On average, DS1 probably watches 20-90 per day.  It's definitely a rare day that either of them watch 4-5 hours of tv!  And if that's the average, does that mean some watch more?  What is the age range for that statistic?

This usually. I've been trying not to turn it on, and I did great for most of the summer, but i'll admit it... I'm on summer vacation and I'm getting bored around the house, so I've been turning it on more often. I don't put on kids shows ever, but sometimes i'll actualy sit down to watch something and DS will sit besides me and watch it too. He usually has a pretty short attention span.

  • Like PPs, our TV is mainly background noise. A lot of the time, we listen to music channels. DS couldn't possibly sit still long enough to actually engage in watching TV. The only time he watches a lot of TV is football season and that's because we all do.

  • prior to 13 months when she would nap after school when we got home, i'd have said none. now that she's older and only naps once after lunch, it's 1-2 hours before bath and bed.

  • I voted 3-4. DD usually gets up and crawls into bed with us and watches a morning cartoon or two. She is in between 1 and 2 naps so when she doesn't take two naps, she "rests" in our bed in the afternoon and watches some of a movie. She usually watches some tv while I get dinner ready before DH gets home. Then we usually put something on on the tv in our bedroom at night while we are getting ready for bed and she'll bounce around on our bed and we'll play so she's only watching off an on. All in all I guess it adds up but it doesn't seem like too much to me throughout the whole day.
  • My DS loves Yo Gabba Gabba, a great preschool show with lessons, singing, dancing, and bright colors.  we let him watch one 30 min. episode a day (he asks for it now!) and occasionally a few minutes of Elmo on Sesame Street.  Otherwise, it's just on in the background.
  • This question is hard for me to answer, our tv is on a lot at different times throughout the day. The only time when she might watch and actually focus on a show is in the morning (Sprout - Sunny Side up Show) and in the evening (Good night show). Other than that she's too busy playing to pay attention to it.
