Personalization on backpacks?

I'm going to buy Claire a small backpack for her birthday.  I want to have it personalized with her name but second guessed myself.  Should I go with just initials?  She will only take it to her daycare and play with it around the house.  I don't imagine she'll take it other publlic places.

So initials or first name?  What would you do?

  • That's so funny you posted this, I was JUST talking to my mom about that. She wants to get A a backpack and have her name embroidered on it. I said I felt kind of nervous about her name on it vs. her initials.

I don't like the idea of everyone who sees it (strangers) knowing her name, because I've watched too much CSI. lol  I guess if it's just for daycare and around the house, you should be OK with the whole first name, but when she gets older and is actually waiting for you to pick her up or something, like school, I'd do just initials. I'm paranoid, I know. :-)

  • I did the name.  It helps them learn name recognition and helps the adults around who need to know whos crap is what quickly.  We don't travel with his school backpack or go to public places or anything.  I would probably think a bit differently if it were for a 6 yr old who would be getting off the bus alone or something.  I say the kids' names so often when we are out that anyone could figure out their names pretty quickly if they wanted to without it being on a backpack.
  • We went with initials.
  • We did a "B" on her back pack, but we bought it for Disney and I really don't want strangers to know her name and be calling her. I would do initials because you never know if you may take it out one day. We have used her back pack for day trips to Fantasy Island and such.

  • We did his name.

    1. It is a small backpack that he will probably use up until 1st grade or so. I'll be driving him to & from school most likely

    2. If we are out & he's wearing it I'm usually calling him by his name anyway and anyone around can hear that his name is Charlie

    3. It helps teachers, etc. find his bag easier and it is also easier for him to recognize.

I should have just read your response & said "ditto" :)

LOL, but you wrote it better!

Tyler had already "outgrown" his TYLER backpack.  He only used it a year, now he has a Spiderman backpack that he found at a yard sale for a $1 and HAD to have.  I still have his name all over it though, big sticker, and zipper pulls.  Stuff gets misplaced and mismatched all the time at school and on the bus.  Heck, one of the aides tried to give me the WRONG KID once because she didn't know the faces with the names yet.  If that kid had his name all over his backpack, I bet she would have noticed before she tried to give him to me!

  • Thanks for all the responses!

I've gotten the wrong stuff at daycare too...repeatedly, even though Claire's name is on everything.  And I do say her name enough when we're in public that anyone would be able to figure it out.

I'm slightly paranoid though.  I'm sure she'll outgrow the pre-school backpack within a year or so so it's all pick-ups and drop-offs with DH and I. I figure when she's old enough to choose a backpack it will have a character on it and not her name.

  • We decided to not put anything on Eva's bag.  That way I can resell it if it's in decent condition when she's done with it.

  • I put and M on my oldest's backpack for kindergarten.  We went with a new bag this year because the old one is a little small and didn't put anything on it.

I wasn't comfortable with the full name.

ETA - we went to the LL Bean outlet in Fayetteville for this backpack and the first one he picked out had someone else's initials on it.  We nearly got it too.  Stick out tongue

  • Initials or nothing at all...I don't need one more thing to worry about in life. But I dunno - we always made fun of kids with their names on their backpacks in school...so I haven't really been thinking about doing it once we get to that point anyway.
