  • I need a "ss" because I'm not into politics. :) (or I guess my vote just doesn't matter than)

I don't think you have to be "into" politics to know whether you lean a certain way on issues.

Truthfully, I'm not into politics either. I kept feeling like I should be paying more attention to the debt ceiling stuff, but I didn't. I do know I am more liberal than conservative!!

  • Well, IDK.. I guess I'm in the middle then. :) I know how I stand on certain issues, but IDK how I stand "overall" I guess.
  • fiscally conservative yet slightly (ever so) socially liberal :)

  • I grew up "Republican" because that's what my father was.  Once I really started thinking for myself, I realized I'm a bleeding heart liberal.  I'm way left of center.

ha! I grew up liberal (because my mom is) but grew up and researched on my own and now I am quite conservative!

    Guess we just switched!

  • Socially very very liberal, fiscally bordering on conservative. I said slightly liberal but I would and could never vote for a candidate who is anti-choice or against gay rights no matter how good the rest of their platform might be.

  • I voted "very liberal"  I have a very hard time finding anything in the conservative platform I can get on board with even remotely.  My parents (very conservative) are mortified by me. My mom has said she doesn't know "where she went wrong with me." Haha!
  • H and I have had a real political reawakening in the past few years.

I grew up as a Republican.  We immigrated here while Reagan was in power, and he and his party stood for everything that was great about America.  We were (and still are) immensely grateful to this country, and were always big on giving back, volunteering, donating, etc.  In my family, conservatism went hand-in-hand with helping others, and for me, that's what defined political conservatism.

But it's become apparent to me that most hardcore conservatives are either religiously (and thus, mindlessly) motivated or just suck and really live up to their reputation as heartless, earth-killing, industry *ss-kissing elitists. I want no part of that.  But I can't really identify with the liberals in this country either.  They want SOMEONE to help the less fortunate, someone to fix this planet, they just don't want that someone to be them.  And the elitism on the left... the liberals that really bug me are the ones who are all "OMG, I'm so liberal and better than anyone who doesn't agree with me, although thinking that actually makes me... not liberal."

On many issues, I lean left: pro-gay marriage, pro-environment, etc. but I can't identify with the left's methods or fanatics.  So everyone is selfish, everyone is hypocritical, both sides suck.  That's my platform.

  • Here is a quote my (Republican) father told me when I was young and it stuck with me. Not that I agree with it, it just stuck with me. I have always considered myself Liberal (and definitely am on social issues,) however I am tending to veer more towards a Republican mindset (fiscally.) I am very confused as to where I lie at this point to be honest.

"To be young and Republican is to not have a heart, To be old and a Democratic is to not have a brain."

What are your thoughts on this quote? (Again this is not my quote so don't go dragging me through the coals for it LOL!)

My mother has said this to me, too, on more than one occasion.  IDK, I understand what they're trying to say, but I disagree (obv, since I"m a democrat & pretty sure I have a functioning brain in my head. LOL).

My mother always told me that when I "grew up & had money," I'd become a Republican.  My father was a Democrat when he was younger & became a Republican later in life "after he had a family & made his money."  IDK, while I understand fiscal conservativeness, my liberal social beliefs (and how that impacts my fiscal values) makes it pretty impossible for me to ever become a Republican.  So I guess if that means I am brainless, that's cool with me. :-)

I have heard this quote before. I agree with the first part, but not the second especially because it seems the GOP wants to gut medicare and social security. I am a bleeding heart liberal FWIW. Grew up in a GOP leaning family, went to college, learned the platforms and realized I was a liberal and have been involved with democratic campaigns in some form or fashion ever since. Interestingly enough, my mom now votes Dem and since GWB, my dad has too.

  • Fiscally, I'm pretty conservative. A lot of that has to do with my upbringing (I wouldn't say I just vote how my parents taught me or anything, I've done my research and I agree with conservative fiscal values). Socially, I'm much more liberal. Sometimes those two things make certain issues really tough for me, and it often makes it difficult to find a candidate I like.

  • Socially I am conservative in that I am super pro-life & it takes presidence in my voting. Fiscally, I guess I am more liberal in that I believe in a responsibility to care for those that can't do it for themselves. I am also very pro mass transit & responsible cities/development/use of resources. Basically I don't fit in a box but I do prioritize my issues & vote accordingly depending on the office.
  • I used to consider myself fiscally conservative. Then I realized that republicans are not fiscally conservative.  Like bubbly, I was conservative because that's how I was raised--though I've never actually been registered republican and have always been registered independent.

Honestly, I despise politics, though I'm also very into politics. I hate democrats and I hate republicans and I don't identify with either party, though am more likely to vote democrat based on social issues alone. The social issues that I'm passionate about outweigh fiscal issues any day, and like I said...republicans are not fiscally conservative or responsible. They just like to say they are.
