This is, like, my bazillionth newbie post so please forgive me.
Are there any brands that are just commonly known to suck, leak, wear out quickly, etc? The more I research and look for deals, the more brands I come across and don't know what to buy...

NUBUNZ
I haven't been impressed with my Flip Diapers. They leak at the seaming all the time, and I had to put a snap in the back and on the inserts to keep them from sliding around. Prefolds and covers are still my fav - most bang for the buck, gusseted covers keep even a LOT of runny poopy in, and I can use them for subsequent kids.
IMHO, of course.

Come home, baby A!
I respectfully disagree.
As a PP mentioned, it really is all relative. We've been using Kushies with DS during the day (SIL cares for him, she wanted an AIO, I didn't want to pay tons of $$ for AIOs we were only going to use for 12 weeks--because she returns home this week) for 11 weeks now. No leaks, no issues. They're not the prettiest, or the softest, or even the best materials... but they held up and they did their job. I bought them used, though... I don't think they're worth the price they sell for new, if that makes sense.
I think they're a good functional option, though, for people who truly want to CD, want the ease of an AIO, and can't afford the pricier brands. You get what you pay for, yes, but they're not horrible.
But that's just my opinion.
Bumgenius.
Goes to show how different everybody can be.
I think if there was one brand that sucked for absolutely everyone, the company wouldn't exist too long.
I have heard nothing but terrible things about Cuteybaby and mostly terrible things about Kushies. Sure, your baby could be the 1 in 10 they work for, but why take that chance?
As others said it really is baby specific but I have heard nothing good about Happy Heinys velcro. I have been told over and over it has major curling problems and doesnt stick for long (worse than the BG 3.0 by most accounts) so you may want to stear clear of the velcro versions of that diaper.
Otherwise I loved my BG 3.0 but if you get them you need to be prepared to swap out all the tabs for the newer velcro that they sell for the 4.0's now on their website. It's a time consuming pain in the butt but otherwise they are great diapers (again IMHO). Otherwise if you want to avoid that headache pay the extra to get BG 4.0 instead.
The only other general consensus I have heard and can vouch for would be stay away from the BumGenius Flannel Wipes they are absolutely awful and you can get way better elsewhere for cheaper/same price.
See, I love my Happy Heiny's with velcro. LOL. We only use them at night, and they look a little tattered, but they are still going strong.
BumGenius on the other hand I HATE HATE HATE. I don't think I've had one of those not leak with my son. I don't know if its the fit or the material or what, but I may as well just let him run around nekkid. I have no idea how they became so popular.

I think it is all realtive, I love BG- mainly their AIO, that is now discontinued, but I do love them. I was not a fan of FB- but I wouldn't say it sucked. Bumkins were awful- and monkey doodles were too-
but I think sometimes you just have to try and figure it out-

I have a few and think that the HH velcro is super strong. Did they start using better materials maybe? Or maybe it's strong early on but wears easily?

AngieBeth - AWESOME siggy photo. Those faces are adorably hilarious!
I have very very rarely (as in, almost never) heard of people liking gDiapers or Sunbaby.
Otherwise, each brand depends on fit, etc.
I hated Lil Joeys and have heard of many, many others with the same experience. But, as PPs have said, some people like them and every baby is different.
But don't buy these. Seriously.
Nubunz they all delaminated and became swim diapers and they didn't even work well then they just plain sucked
I also had some off brand that I got on ebay they fell apart after 3-4 washs can't remember the beand.
Love my sunbabies though some others don't
Flips are DH's go-to diapers. OP, you probably won't find a brand that is universally hated. Otherwise, they wouldn't still be in business.
I really don't like Fuzzibunz or Softbums diapers though. My favourites are bumGenius 4.0s and bumGenius AIOs.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Rump-a-Rooz. I guess they don't suck, but they aren't up to par with some of their competition, at least not IMHO. They are small and I don't see how they can realistically be a OS diaper.
But, it's true: There's a butt for every diaper!
I love mine too! Even my used one is still holding super strong! However, HATE their snap diapers. I can't get a good fit at all. I'm considering getting more of them and Blueberries.
I've started to hate the velcro on my BG 4.0s. It's in the worst shape of any of my velcro, and I've had diapers come loose on DD when the hooks slide. If it's better, I hate to see how the 3.0 velcro was. The diapers themseves rock though.
