finger foods and purees - how to handle?

So it looks like DS might be ready for finger foods. He loses his mind with the purees and is only happy when you hand him food or the spoon to feed himself. Tonight I ended up covered in acorn squash and potatoes because I held him through a tantrum wherein he stuck his hands in his mouth, grabbed out the puree and threw it at me. Awesomesauce.

DD, on the other hand, is a happy puree eater. Happy, happy, happy. And very uncoordinated. The kid can't even get a puff into her mouth.

So how do you handle mealtimes when one is eating from a spoon and one is eating on their own? Should I push DD toward finger foods?

I'm a little irritated that I now have to prepare foods two ways, but that's a whole other thread...

Re: finger foods and purees - how to handle?

  •  Have you tried the mesh feeder.  I would let the girls use that while I was spoon feeding the other.  It bought me some time.

This is a stretch but I was beyond excited to discover that my girls could drink through a straw (they got a hold of their brother's straw cup and were able to drink it).  For breakfast I would mix up some plan whole milk yogurt and a thin fruit puree and let them drink it.  My "crabby eater" was Emily...I could never get food to her fast enough.  The yogurt smoothie kept her busy for a while and there was a lot less screaming going on in my kitchen.  We probably started this just after seven months.  They only used the take and toss straw cups because they don't have a valve and make it easier to clean and drink from.

Good luck...I feel for you.  Mealtimes have become much calmer around here!

  • DS was like this, too.  I realized he was a much happier puree eater when he had something to keep his hands busy.  I started buying snack sized sticks of cheese and pinching off bites for him to pick up, and he LOVES it.  Just something to keep him occupied, and I can shovel in bites of puree in between cheese bites.

Since you're making their food, maybe you can dice up some veggies after you steam them, before you puree, so he can have some to 'play with'?  Pinched off bites of banana are great, too.

  • Even at a younger age, I would always prepare their purees a bit on the thicker side, so they would get used to the consistancy (nephew has eating issues that I think stem from eating purees too long, so I'm trying to avoid) from early start.  They have done fine from the get-go. Yes, the first couple of times they made faces, but got used to it quickly.
