Food Allergy

What's the deal?

Asher is 6 months old and we started solids at 4 months. He was allergic to a few foods, so we decided to stop and try again now. I have since tried peaches, pears, apples and bananas which all cause him to have a rash along his temples, down to his eyes. I asked the pedi when we started a couple months ago, and she claimed not to worry, it would go away soon enough, but is it possible he could be allergic to just fruits? He's only eaten organic. We have another appointment Friday, but I wonder if I should schedule an appt with an allergist or is this fairly common?

Re: What's the deal?

  • I am extremely biased to not listening to the pedi and going with your gut feeling. My pedi dismissed my concerns, so I made an allergist appointment on my own. It definitely sounds like food allergies to some or all of the fruits you have tried so far. I would want an allergists opinion. Where in Ohio are you? I highly recommend my allergist and I am in the Cincinnati area.

I'm southeast. About 2 hrs from Cincinnati, however, I'm not against the drive. We had to make several trips to Children's with my older DS. Who is the allergist?

I met a mom at the park recently who told me her son was allergic to fructose and he couldn't have fruit or fruit juice. I had never heard of that allergy before, but it may be worth looking into. Have you tried to introduce foods other than fruit?

Yes, he's fine with any vegetable so far, and I've snuck him small tastes of icing and popsicles, and no reaction.
