Today is MTV's 30th birthday/anniversary. Do you remember the first video you saw? Mine was In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins. You know, the one with the floating head and infared heat scenes.
Can't say if I remember which one. But my hometown didn't get cable until way into the 80s... so I first saw videos on Friday Night Videos.. an hour long show late at night on NBC It was probably college before I actually watched any MTV (1985 or later).
I remember them playing a lot of Van Halen, Journey, Men at Work and Cyndi Lauper.

I honestly don't remember, but I didn't have MTV until 2 years later (our cable provider didn't carry it in 1981) and I got my video fixes on local cable stations or the Philly ones (living in NJ, I could get their channels until the mid 80s).
I want to say it was "Hold Me Now" by Thompson Twins but I really don't know.
I do remember the first Duran Duran video I saw on MTV (I'm a Duranie) was Rio. But I was a huge fan already and I was stalking the "top of the hour" part where the VJ said what videos would be played.
I actually still have 15 video tapes of MTV videos and shows and concerts. One of these days I'll have them transferred to DVD.
I can't remember what the first video I saw was but I do remember our neighborhood was one of the first to get the cable boxes so we could get channels like MTV. I went with my dad to pick our's up (I was 11) and they had all of these cool MTV buttons. Man, I wish I still had those buttons.

I don't know if it was the first one, but I remember "Hungry Like the Wolf" when I was in 7th grade.

I am a real dork because I did not really ever watch MTV. The television in our house that had the cable box was in the living room and my dad did not like MTV so we did not watch it. My B&W set in my room only had channels 1 to 13.

I can't remember what actual video I was watching, but the first time I remember watching MTV was a few years after it started. I was 10 and at a party at my parents' friends' house watching tv with said friends' teenage daughters.
John Cougar Mellencamp "Hurts so Good" we had just moved from England and my brother and I were searching through the cable channels at my Aunt's house. We were in awe of all the channels as we only had 3 channels in the UK. Luckily, when we moved back to England in 1985, there were now 4 tv channels
Simply Red's "Holding Back the Years". My brother came home from college, plopped on the couch and we watched it (and the other 6 or 7 vidoes they had) all weekend. I was hooked.
And all the VJ's- Marc, Martha, Alan, etc. The spaceship taking off. And MTV played Music Television. All music videos- All. The. Time. And It Was Good. We used to rush home from school to see the new videos that were on and try to memorize all the dance moves we saw! Good Times!!
I remember the Motel's "Only the Lonely". I went to upstate NY that summer with my family to visit all our relatives and I remember laying on the floor at my aunt's house with my cousins watching the few videos that were out. We got MTV at home shortly thereafter.

"I Eat Cannibals" by... I don't remember, lol. I used to sit and watch MTV and write down each video I saw... dork. But I totally wish I still had that list!
