So I know it's totally normal for babies to cry when they're pooping/farting because their systems are immature as is their knowledge of which muscles to use to accomplish these tasks. But I was just wondering when they start to understand this better and fuss less when the pooping/farting commence. I know it will be longer for my LO since he's a preemie but just wondering for a normal full term baby how long this lasts. Does anyone know?

Re: When do the poopy cries stop?
I don't think crying is normal. Fussing or grunting, honking and looking a bit uncomfortable are normal if your baby is crying while pooping (not just after from being dirty) it could be painful for him.
As for grunting and honking my daughter did that until about 5 months but still grunts when she poops.
Little Rose is 2 1/2.

paige cried when she pooped and honestly - she stopped that last week...she still goes red in the face while she pushes but no more crying.
she is now 10 weeks 5 days old.
This. I don't think that's normal?
It is completely normal. Our DS does this with gas & poops too. Not all of them, just sometimes. I've talked to 4 different pediatricians about it - all with different practices and their answers all varies. All say it is normal unless they really are constipated & having hard pellet stools, nausea, bloody stools, projectile vomiting, etc.
My DS does not go everyday and the day he finally goes seems to be the worst with screaming/crying. His stool isn't hard, just normal stool.
Anyhow, they all say 3-4months tends to be the endpoint for this. The same as with the typical resolution of colic since many colicky babies cry/scream related to gas & uncomfortable GI symptoms. The definition & dx of colic actually now includes babies that cry/scream with gas/poop if it interferes with their sleep...
We are almost at 8 weeks. I'm hoping his digestive track matures soon for his sake and mine :0
Good luck!!
