Taking Kids to Disneyland...

So, my H wants to go to Disneyland when A is three.  I think it is much too young and we should take her when she is at least five.  I went when I was four and that was pushing it.

Just out of curiosity, at what age would you take your kid to a place like Disenyland?

Re: Taking Kids to Disneyland...

  • We just went this past April.  Tillman was about 4 months shy of his 6th birthday.  It was the perfect age.  There were only like 3 (maybe 2) rides that he couldn't go on.

TTC #2 for a million years: SA normal, CD 23 bloodwork shows nothing amiss, ovulation detected. Next step: ? maybe CD3 bloodwork to check eggs? All out of pocket, so limited IF tests/treatments.

  • We have gone to Disneyland and just got back from Disney World. There is no way I would take a kid under 6 or so to either. Even 6 was a little young but he did have a good time. I think the perfect age is probably around 8-10. The 10 yr old *loved* everything... the 8 yr old was still too scared to go on much.

  • On a smaller scale. We just took DS who is 3 to Silverwood in Idaho last week. We went for 1 day. He loved the water park area there is a large younger kid area with spray stuff and some small slides.

He hated the rides and was only big enough for maybe about 5 of them and DS is pretty tall for his age. He had a look of terror on almost ever ride we put him on. He only did 3 rides.

  • I want to wait at least til no one is napping so we don't have to worry about nap schedules.  I'm thinking when Cooper is 4 or 5 and Ben is 7 or 8.   Plus I actually don't like rides at all... so I dont' really want to go.

  • I said SS because we have already taken DD to Dland, and she was just shy of 2 years old. There is no way I would have planned a special disney only trip for a 2 year old, but we were down there visiting family- as were some friends- so we met up with them there for the day. It was fun, but rough. We probably wont take her again till she is about 5.
  • Ok, so I'm not crazy!  I just have no desire to have to work around naps and carry the kid around.

  • We went this past February. M had just turned 4 and W 10 months.  They both had so much fun, and M still talks about it all the time.  We plan to go back in maybe 3 ish years, so #3 will be 3.  Naps don't bother me so much, since I like the idea of heading back to the hotel mid-day and not being gone all day.

I took Alex when he was 3 and a half and it was perfect.  I would have NOT done a big huge week long thing there - we did one day - and it was enough.  3 is a great age to go.

Although once I had Willow my mom demanded that I take her to Disneyland everytime I took Alex.  BUT I HATE TAKING BABIES TO DISNEYLAND.  It is nothing but a lot of work and is NOT FUN, and stole away my attention from Alex once he was older.

I do not understand taking a baby to Disneyland.  But my sister did it with both her kids, and I had to every year with Willow.  This was the first year she truly enjoyed it.

PS - I'm from So Cal and have been to D-Land over 100 times

  • We visited relatives in FL when N was 9mo and took him to Disney World.  He Loved it.  I?m meh on Disney usually, but seeing my baby that excited over everything was amazing. He loved the dumbo ride, the Toy Story ride and the pretty princesses.  If we weren?t there to visit family, I wouldn?t have made a special trip. If you two want to go, take her! Don?t buy into the ?She won?t remember it? BS.  She?ll have fun in the moment. If we waited to do fun things with our kids until they remembered it, there would be no fun until they were 4 or 5.

Nap time was a challenge, but once I put him in the carrier he fell asleep on me.

We went to Dollywood in May and even though he could only go on a handful of rides, he had a fantastic time and still talks about the scrambler and star shooter.  It was the toddler rides that bored him silly.

Disneyland would b a good park to tie together with a San Diego trip. That's what we'll likely do in a year or so.

Plus, if you take her before she turns 3, she gets in free.

  • *SS*  I wouldn't go younger than 6-7 "for the kid".  They probably won't remember anyways.  That said, both my SSs have been hitting the southern calif parks since they were 4 & 8 because my in-laws are right there and we visit them every year anyways...gives us something to do, and there are enough adults to rotate for us to ride.  It also depends on the personality of the kids.  My one SS wanted to ride them all at 8, and my other SS still is too scared to ride some at 11.

  • It really depends on your kid.  Meg is 4 and is DYING to go.  She begged to go for her 4th birthday and I told her that it was very expensive and that we couldn't.  So in lieu of gifts, she asked for money for her Disneyland fund.  She saved about $200.  She is very much into princesses and can't wait to meet them.  And she loves rides and wishes that she could go on adult rides.   She doesn't nap regularly, but I'm assuming that she will need one on our trip.

We are going in September but not taking the little kids.

So, to the "I would never" responses, you don't really know what you would do until your child is that age and all kids are different.  ;)

  • I planned a trip to Disneyland for Livy's 1st birthday.  (I can see you all looking at me crazy! =P )  She had so much fun!  Did we ride every single ride?  No, but she just loved getting on the Fantasyland rides, as well as It's A Small World, Pirates of the Caribbean, and the Winnie the Pooh ride (She loved Dumbo, she kept clapping and saying "wooooo"!).  And she just LOVED meeting characters.  She only naps once a day, so that definitely made it easier, but I would not hesitate to take her back, and I guarantee it will be before she is 3!

  • We plan to take Collin when he's about four, which is the age that both DH and I went for the first time. I still remember going the first time and being so excited about everything. We'll likely leave Bean with my mom since she/he will only be one when he turns four.

  • I am SS. We took M right after she turned 1 just because my parents live near to Disney. We are going again before she is 2.

  • we are going for his 4th birthday but honestly would wait 1 more year if we weren't having a baby soon.  We want to do a "special trip" just for him before baby comes and I want to go to the beach so we are doing a week in So Cal and we both get something we want

  • We are hoping to take C there next fall (along with Six Flags Magic Mountain and possibly Knott's Berry Farm), when she is just over two.  Our hope is to TTC right after that, and I refuse to go to parks if I can't ride all the thrill rides. :)  She has already spent two full days at amusement parks and will be doing two more in September.  I think as long as you are comfortable with being able to go at a slower pace, stop for naps when needed (or return to your room) and switch off for non-child-friendly rides.  A friend of mine took her 4 and 1 year olds to WDW a few months ago and posted an awesome "guide" on her Facebook page that had some great tips.  It definitely made me feel like it is more manageable.  Since DH and I are park junkies it would be torturous for us to wait until our kids are both old enough to go on rides before hitting up the parks, and we're willing to compromise on stuff if need be to make it happen as best as we can.

  • I guess I am a ss. I would like to take C before we have another child. We have talked about WDW so we can go with my H's brother and his family. I don't like big rides, my SIL doesn't either, but the big boys do. We figure the big boys can go on rides while us and our little boys do the kid stuff. Plus, I just really want to go back to Disney.

  • we went last summer about 2 weeks before Cruz turned 3 and had an AMAZING time!  He could ride on almost all the rides and was old enough to have patience to stand in the lines.  He was great on the airplane down and back up and loved the bunk beds in our hotel room.  He wasn't a fan of the disney charcters in costume but I don't think he ever will be.  he still talks about the trip.
